The New York Knicks and the Cleveland Cavaliers are set to begin the Eastern Conference Finals on May 19, 2026, in a matchup featuring two teams that have navigated contrasting paths to the penultimate round of the NBA playoffs.

The No. 3 seeded Knicks enter the series riding a wave of significant momentum, having secured seven consecutive playoff victories. During this streak, New York has outscored its opponents by 185 points, establishing a new NBA record for point differential over a seven-game span.

New York’s route to the conference finals was relatively efficient. The Knicks defeated the Atlanta Hawks in six games during the first round and followed that performance by sweeping the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round.

In contrast, the No. 4 seeded Cleveland Cavaliers have faced a more grueling road. Cleveland was pushed to seven games by a Raptors team described as flawed and injury-plagued in the first round.

The Cavaliers’ second-round series against the top-seeded Detroit Pistons, who finished the regular season with 60 wins, proved even more challenging. After dropping the first two games of that series, Cleveland rallied to win, including a dominant 125-94 victory in Game 7 in Detroit.

This victory marked a turning point for Cleveland, as the team had not won a road game prior to their series against the Pistons.

The series represents a significant milestone for several key figures. All-Star Donovan Mitchell has reached the conference finals for the first time in his nine-year professional career.

For the Cavaliers as a franchise, What we have is the first time they have reached the conference finals since 2018 and the first time they have done so without LeBron James since 1992.

The New York Knicks are pursuing their first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1999, a series in which they lost to the San Antonio Spurs in five games.

The current Knicks squad is led by coach Mike Brown, who took over after Tom Thibodeau was dismissed following a six-game loss to the Indiana Pacers in last season’s conference finals.

Tactically, the matchup presents a clash of styles. The Cavaliers are coming off two series characterized by brute force against the Raptors, and Pistons.

The Knicks, however, are noted for utilizing more finesse and skill to defeat their opponents. This shift in style may favor Cleveland, as they are considered better equipped to handle a finesse-based attack than the physical battles of the previous rounds.

The Knicks’ offensive engine is driven by the duo of Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns. Brunson is regarded as one of the most electric scoring guards in the league, known for his efficiency across all three levels of scoring.

Towns provides critical spacing as a stretch five, having recorded a 36.8% shooting percentage from beyond the arc.

Cleveland will look to counter New York’s firepower with its own star power, specifically through the contributions of Donovan Mitchell and James Harden.

While the Knicks have appeared more dominant in the postseason thus far, the Cavaliers have demonstrated a high level of resilience by overcoming early deficits against the league’s top seed.

The winner of the series will advance to the NBA Finals, representing the Eastern Conference.
