The Orlando Magic see potential for global expansion through the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) European league. the Magic defeated the Memphis Grizzlies in Berlin this week, the first of two regular season games in Europe. They will play again in London on January 18.
the NBA views these european games as crucial for audience growth. The league plans to launch a 16-team European division with the International Basketball Federation (Fiba) around October 2027.
Charlie Freeman, Orlando Magic president of business operations, said NBA Europe represents a “natural” step for global basketball growth. He believes the new division will complement, not compete with, existing North American franchises.
Freeman suggested a European league coudl reduce the need for NBA teams to travel to Europe, allowing them to explore other international markets. “NBA Europe is going to be its own league that will continue to grow,” he said.”We’ll leave this for Adam [Silver] and Mark Tatum to decide at the league level. But we still want to continue to grow the game, and it might allow us to go to other cities throughout the world.”
the Magic are targeting Brazil and Puerto rico for expansion, while also considering Germany and the UK as “untapped markets” for commercial and tourism opportunities. The team leverages its German players - Franz and Moritz Wagner, and Tristan da Silva – and partnerships with companies like Deutsche Telekom and Visit orlando to strengthen its international business strategy.
“It’s about finding the right partnerships and working with the right people,” Freeman said. “You can’t just show up in a marketplace and expect massive success, so I think over in the UK and in Germany, it’s [about] working with the right companies, growing the brand, and looking at commercial opportunities.”
NBA commissioner Adam Silver has cautioned that NBA Europe won’t deliver immediate financial returns.
