NBA Eyes European Expansion with New Basketball League Plans
Updated June 7, 2025
Oklahoma City—The NBA is actively exploring the possibility of launching a new basketball league in Europe, though the initiative remains years from becoming a reality, according to Commissioner Adam Silver. Speaking at an event Friday, Silver emphasized the complexity of the undertaking, requiring extensive consultation with stakeholders.
The NBA’s European expansion aims to tap into a large, underserved fanbase. Silver and FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis initially announced plans in March, targeting a 16-team league. Discussions have since become more productive, with the NBA engaging directly with the EuroLeague and its member clubs to explore potential partnerships.
Several European cities, including London, Manchester, Rome, and Munich, have expressed interest in hosting teams. The league’s board of governors will further discuss the European plans at thier July meeting in Las Vegas. A launch or major declaration could coincide with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, capitalizing on the heightened international basketball spotlight.
European talent already substantially impacts the NBA, with stars like Nikola Jokic of Denver, Giannis Antetokounmpo of Milwaukee, Luka Doncic of the los Angeles Lakers, and Victor Wembanyama of San Antonio hailing from Europe. these players have collectively won five of the last seven MVP awards.
“I will say it’s measured in years, not months,” Silver said.”So, we’re at least a couple years away from launching… We also want to make sure that we’re consulting with all the appropriate stakeholders.”
What’s next
The NBA will continue discussions with FIBA, EuroLeague, and potential European partners in the coming months, with further updates expected after the board of governors meeting in July. The league aims to create a European basketball league that complements the existing structure while offering a distinct NBA-style experience.
