National Basketball Association (NBA) commissioner Adam⁣ Silver says a decision on league expansion is coming next year.

Silver confirmed‍ over the summer that the NBA was actively exploring⁤ expansion, conducting in-depth analysis ⁢of economic and non-economic factors related to‍ adding new teams.

At the time, Silver acknowledged that a decision on identifying potential new markets for an expansion franchise remained a long way ⁢off. Now, the commissioner has told reporters before the NBA Cup championship game on December 16th that the league will make a “determination” about expansion‍ in 2026.

Silver also namechecked Seattle and Las Vegas, both widely considered the frontrunners to be awarded a new team.

“I think Seattle and las Vegas are two unbelievable cities,” said Silver, ‍as reported by Yahoo Sports.

“Obviously, we had ‍a team in ⁣Seattle that had great success. We have a WNBA team in Las Vegas in ⁣the Aces.⁣ We’ve been playing the Summer‌ League here for 20 years. Playing our Cup games here, ‌so we’re very familiar ‌with ⁣this market.I don’t have any doubt that Las Vegas is, despite all the major league teams here ⁣and the ‍other entertainment properties, that this city could support an NBA team.

“I think now we’re in the process of working with our teams ‍and⁣ gauging the level of interest and having a better understanding of what the economics would be on the ground for those particular teams and what a pro‌ forma‌ would look like for them. And then sometime in 2026,we’ll make a determination.”

Historical Context: Recent NBA Expansion

The Charlotte‍ Hornets ‌ (then known as the Bobcats) were the last expansion team to join the NBA in 2004. Since then, team valuations have soared, with⁤ a group led by Bill ⁣Chisholm recently purchasing the Boston Celtics for a reported $4 billion. This dramatic increase in franchise value significantly alters the financial landscape for potential expansion teams.

The⁢ NBA’s decision to delay ‍a ⁢formal ‍expansion announcement until 2026 is ⁢a strategic move. It allows the league to thoroughly⁢ assess ‍the⁢ financial implications for existing owners, especially regarding ‌revenue sharing and dilution of broadcast rights. ⁣seattle and‍ Las Vegas present compelling cases, but the NBA will prioritize maximizing value for ⁢all 30 teams. The success of the WNBA’s Aces in Las Vegas demonstrates‍ the city’s ⁣appetite for professional basketball, while Seattle’s passionate fanbase and existing ⁤infrastructure make it a natural fit. The economic ⁢analysis will be crucial, and the league will likely seek guarantees regarding arena funding and ⁣local market support.
