Grading teh NBA’s Early Offseason Moves
Updated June 27, 2025
NBA teams are actively reshaping their rosters for the upcoming 2025-26 season. With the draft concluded and free agency approaching, several key signings and extensions are already underway.
Kyrie Irving, recovering from a torn ACL,has declined his player option with the Dallas Mavericks but intends to sign a three-year contract to remain with the team.
The Houston Rockets, fresh off acquiring Kevin Durant in a major trade, have extended center Steven Adams’ contract for three years at $39 million. This follows a strong season for Adams as the backup center for the Western Conference’s second-seeded team.
As deals become official, their implications for the 2025-26 season and beyond are being evaluated.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are facing challenges in re-signing Julius Randle and Nickeil Alexander-Walker after extending Reid. The team will have to make choices about who to prioritize, starting with paying reid like a starter.
Only the Brooklyn Nets could have made a similar offer to Reid, and there was no clear path for him to become a starter if randle returns. Reid’s market would have been around the $14.1 million non-taxpayer midlevel exception, far less than Minnesota offered. He also had the option of exercising his $15 million player option for 2025-26.
Assuming max 8% raises, Reid’s salary for next season will be $21.6 million. Minnesota is about $33 million shy of the second luxury tax apron, including team options for Josh Minott and Garza gap. This might be enough to bring back randle, whose 2025-26 option would carry a $31 million cap hit.Retaining Randle and Alexander-Walker now seems impossible without a trade.
The Timberwolves are prioritizing big men after drafting Rob dillingham and Terrence Shannon Jr. last year. They also have Jaylen Clark, who showed defensive promise in his rookie season after missing 2023-24 due to injury.
The Timberwolves are paying Reid through his prime years,as he’ll turn 26 in August and be 30 at the end of his contract. Though, there are questions about whether Reid is a starting-caliber player despite winning the Sixth Man award in 2023-24.
Reid’s defensive limitations were exposed when he played center last season after Minnesota traded Karl-Anthony Towns. Lineups with Reid at center allowed a 116.3 defensive rating, compared to 103.0 when he played power forward.
The second apron and steeper luxury tax penalties mean overpaying contributors is more costly. While Reid has been important to the Timberwolves, paying him like a starter will force sacrifices down the line.
The Rockets’ extension for VanVleet replaces a $44.9 million team option for 2025-26. VanVleet would have had a tough time beating this offer on the open market, as only the Nets could legally do so using cap space.
VanVleet will make less next season than Kyrie Irving, who is rehabbing an ACL tear.Irving added more new money ($76 million over two years beyond 2025-26) than VanVleet.
VanVleet holds a player option for 2026-27.Houston is hard-capped at the second luxury-tax apron due to the Kevin Durant trade, but this restriction may not exist next year, allowing them to re-sign VanVleet to a bigger deal.
Getting VanVleet for around $20 million less than his option allows Houston to access its non-taxpayer midlevel exception. This makes them a player for a big-time free agent to complement durant and their young core.
Nickeil alexander-Walker is an obvious Houston target, while Gary Trent Jr.’s shooting is another fit. You Jerome would be a good value but might be similar to Reed Sheppard.
Access to the full midlevel should help Houston replace depth lost in the Durant trade and strengthen the Rockets as championship contenders.
Irving declined a $43 million player option for 2025-26 and will sign an extension, adding two years and $76 million to his contract.
The Mavericks had leverage because only the Nets had cap space to sign Irving outright. This extension keeps Irving in Dallas alongside Luka Dončić.
What’s next
The NBA offseason is just beginning, and more moves are expected as teams position themselves for the 2025-26 season. Free agency will be a key period for teams to fill roster holes and compete for a championship.
