Lakers ownership change: Mark Walter to acquire majority stake
Updated June 28, 2025
After a transformative season for the Los Angeles Lakers, which included acquiring Luka Doncic but ended in a first-round playoff exit, questions arose about the team’s future.
No one anticipated the news that the Buss family, owners since 1979,agreed to sell a majority ownership stake to businessman Mark Walter at a $10 billion valuation.
Walter stated that Jeanie Buss woudl remain governor and oversee team operations. However, changes to the roster are needed for the Lakers to contend next season.
The Lakers won 50 games in JJ Redick’s first season and secured the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. they acquired Doncic midseason, and he meshed well with LeBron James and Austin Reaves. Though, they lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round, and the fit of the Lakers’ pieces is imperfect.
Doncic and Reaves are defensive liabilities, and James, entering his 23rd season, may decline. Rob Pelinka,Lakers president of basketball operations, predicted an active summer.
“There is going to be a lot of movement around the NBA. It just feels that way,” Pelinka said on May 1. “There’s just so many aggressive leaders and organizations that are expecting now success. so, I think there will be a lot of opportunities for us to look at. I really do. I’m excited about the offseason, and what will come our way.”
Despite other teams making moves, the Lakers have remained on the sidelines. They were connected to a deal where Mark Williams was traded to Phoenix.
The Lakers have limited assets to improve the team this summer. They are projected to have the taxpayer midlevel exception, worth $5.7 million, as James is expected to pick up the final year of his contract for $52.6 million.
Dalton Knecht and the Lakers’ 2031 first-rounder will be positive assets, and also the expiring contracts of Rui Hachimura ($18.3 million),Gabe Vincent ($11.5 million) and Maxi Kleber ($11 million) as Pelinka searches for a center.
Pelinka indicated that Reaves would not be traded.
“The level of confidence in Austin Reaves, LeBron James and Luca Doncic is at an all-time high still,” Pelinka said. “I think those three guys have incredible promise playing together. And we will collectively do a better job to make sure they’re surrounded with the right pieces to have ultimate success.”
rumors have linked the Lakers to trade talks with the Utah Jazz for center Walker Kessler and the Miami Heat for wing Andrew wiggins. Representatives for Reaves and Vincent were not contacted about any of the teams involved.
What’s next
The Lakers will likely explore trade options and free agency to improve their roster around James, Doncic and Reaves, focusing on acquiring a starting center and improving defensively.
