The National Basketball Association (NBA) enters the final day of its regular season on April 12, 2026, with 10 of the 20 postseason seeds still undecided. While several top positions are locked, a series of games on April 12 will determine the final seeding for the playoffs and the participants in the SoFi NBA Play-In Tournament.
In the Eastern Conference, the top four seeds have been finalized. The Detroit Pistons hold the No. 1 seed with a record of 59-22, followed by the Boston Celtics at No. 2 (55-26), the New York Knicks at No. 3 (53-28) and the Cleveland Cavaliers at No. 4 (51-30).
Eastern Conference Seeding Scenarios
The race for the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds remains active. The Atlanta Hawks currently hold the No. 5 spot with a 46-35 record. A victory in their April 12 game against the Miami Heat would secure the No. 5 seed regardless of other results. If the Hawks lose, they can still maintain No. 5 if Orlando wins or Toronto loses; otherwise, they would drop to No. 6.
The Toronto Raptors enter the final day at No. 6 with a record of 45-36. A win against Brooklyn on April 12 guarantees them a top-six seed. However, a loss could see them slide as far as No. 8, depending on the results of games involving the Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers.
Specifically, the Raptors would finish No. 6 with a loss if both Orlando and Philadelphia also lose. They would finish No. 7 if either Orlando or Philadelphia wins, and No. 8 if both of those teams win.
The No. 6 seed is contested by the Hawks, Raptors, Magic, and 76ers. In the event of a three-way tie between Atlanta, Toronto, and Orlando, the seeding would be No. 5 Atlanta, No. 6 Toronto, and No. 7 Orlando. If Atlanta secures the No. 5 seed and a three-way tie occurs between Toronto, Orlando, and Philadelphia, the 76ers would take the No. 6 seed, leaving Toronto and Orlando to compete in the 7-8 play-in game.
Western Conference Standings and Play-In
In the Western Conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder have secured the No. 1 seed. The San Antonio Spurs are currently positioned at No. 2, and the Denver Nuggets at No. 3. However, the Los Angeles Lakers have clinched a top-four seed and have the opportunity to move into the No. 3 spot if they defeat the Utah Jazz and the Nuggets lose to San Antonio on April 12.
The Houston Rockets are locked into the No. 5 seed following a loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on April 9. The Timberwolves currently hold the No. 6 seed.
The seeds for No. 3, 4, 8, and 9 in the West are still subject to change based on the results of the final 15-game slate on April 12.
Play-In Tournament Matchups
The SoFi NBA Play-In Tournament is scheduled to take place from April 14 to April 17, 2026. Based on standings as of April 10, the projected matchups are as follows:
- Western Conference: The Phoenix Suns (7) will face the Portland Trail Blazers (8), while the LA Clippers (9) will face the Golden State Warriors (10).
- Eastern Conference: The Orlando Magic (7) will face the Philadelphia 76ers (8), and the Charlotte Hornets (9) will face the Miami Heat (10).
The Charlotte Hornets are locked into the East’s 9-10 play-in game after a loss to the Detroit Pistons on April 9.
The NBA playoffs are scheduled to officially begin on April 18, 2026, following the conclusion of the Play-In Tournament.
