The Nuggets‘ recent decision to terminate manager Brent Matehaele’s contract shocked the basketball world and surprised many, especially former Nuggets manager Alf Arlidge.

Rumors of a change in coaching strategy had been circulating in the basketball world, but Matehaele’s impressive performance had silenced these speculations. Still, earlier this week, Nuggets owner Sports Entertainment Network (SEN) officially announced its intention to search for a new head coach for the 2025 season.

“Brent has been a great addition to the Nuggets,” Drew said, echoing the sentiments of many within the organization. “In just five seasons, he won two NBL titles and took the team to the semi-finals. His impact on Otago basketball cannot be underestimated. The excitement he injected into the Edgar Center The passion was immense.”

Drew continued. “While we don’t know the details behind this decision, it is heartbreaking to see such a great chapter come to an end. We can only wait and see what happens next.”

Arlidge, who led the Nuggets from 2010 to 2013 and led them to the playoffs in his final year, shared his thoughts on the sudden coaching change. “What Brent has achieved has been amazing. He has brought back a banner that no one else has been able to achieve. I think it’s a little early to let him go. He still has a lot to offer this club. But ultimately we are not involved in the ownership decisions and our loyalty to our community runs deep.”

he guessed. “Maybe there’s a broader vision at work, maybe they’re thinking about giving the young Perth Wildcats coaches a chance.”

In July, SEN’s parent company made headlines with the news that it was selling a significant stake in the Perth Wildcats to Mark Arena for A$40 million (approximately NZ$44.2 million). Despite this, SEN has retained its stake and says it will “continue to explore opportunities at the Otago Nuggets in a manner that is mutually beneficial to Perth Wildcats players and management.”

The Wildcats’ coaching staff includes Gerard Martin and Dan Vlahov, both of whom have experience with the Nuggets. Wildcats Academy Director Keegan Crawford also played a key role in helping Matehaele lead the Nuggets to their first NBL title in 2022. Crawford, who is highly regarded in the industry, recently joined the Utah Jazz coaching staff, but a coaching role in Dunedin remains a possibility.

Veteran Dunedin coach Todd Marshall is now committed to Hoiho, while Gavin Briggs, who has extensive experience with the Nuggets, is also juggling his law enforcement duties with his coaching dreams. Arlidge himself also chose not to return to the club.

This has made Otago men’s team Tupu head coach Sam Fielding a likely local candidate. Other teams including the Southland Sharks, Taranaki Ayers and Hawke’s Bay Hawks are also looking for new coaching talent as the Nuggets evaluate their options.
