NBI Raids Alleged POGO Hub in Davao, Seizes Computers and Arrests Dozens
Panabo City, Davao del Norte - in a major crackdown on illegal online gambling, agents from the National Bureau of Inquiry (NBI) raided an alleged Philippine offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) hub in Panabo City, Davao del Norte, seizing over 50 computers and arresting 59 individuals. The raid, conducted on December 6, targeted the sprawling two-hectare warehouse suspected of housing a large-scale POGO operation. NBI-11 Spokesperson Ely Leano confirmed that the operation was carried out based on a search warrant issued for syndicated estafa and online illegal gambling in violation of the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
“We will go to the area where the computers are being setup,” leano stated, highlighting the focus on digital evidence.”After we tag all these computer gadgets,we will now be applying for a Cyber Warrant allowing the NBI Digital Forensic to examine the content of these computers that, indeed, these Chinese nationals are engaged in POGO activities.”
The arrested individuals included 55 Chinese nationals, three Malaysians, and one Filipino. The warehouse, which appeared to be a self-contained operation, featured seperate rooms for a kitchen, dining area, and even living quarters for the alleged POGO workers.
Adding to the suspicion of a large-scale operation, authorities discovered an unfinished room within the warehouse, with construction materials scattered on the floor, suggesting plans for further expansion.
The NBI-11 has also issued subpoenas to individuals allegedly involved in the POGO operation, including unnamed government officials, who are expected to appear at the NBI Regional Office next week.
This raid comes amidst growing concerns over the proliferation of pogos in the Philippines, with critics raising concerns about their potential links to criminal activity, human trafficking, and money laundering.
