National Coloured Congress (NCC) leader and Member of Parliament Fadiel Adams will remain in jail until at least May 13, 2026, after his bail application was opposed by the State in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday. Adams, who was arrested in Cape Town on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, faces five counts: two of defeating or obstructing the administration of justice and three of fraud. The charges stem from allegations that he interfered with the investigation into the 2017 murder of Sindiso Magaqa, a former ANC Youth League secretary-general.

The State argued that Adams acted unlawfully by visiting the suspected hitman, Sibusiso Ncengwa, in 2024 while the murder case was still under investigation. According to court submissions, Adams flew to Durban and was allegedly taken by police to meet Ncengwa at the Westville Correctional Facility, a move the State described as obstruction of justice.

During Adams’ court appearance, the State opposed his release, citing concerns about his attitude, and behavior. The prosecution stated that Adams had used profanity in court and had made public statements that undermined the legal process. The State also highlighted discrepancies in Adams’ addresses and the need to verify information from his press briefings, which they described as potentially indicative of a “catch me if you can” mentality.

Adams’ legal representative, Bruce Hendricks, argued that his client should be granted bail, stating that the State’s request for a postponement was not justified. Hendricks pointed out that the warrant for Adams’ arrest was stamped by the KwaZulu-Natal Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on April 30, 2026, for a matter dated January 24, 2025, and that the State had already had ample time to prepare its case. He also questioned why the State was seeking to verify Adams’ address when he had been arrested at his parliamentary residence in Cape Town.

The magistrate ultimately granted the State’s request to remand Adams in custody until May 13, allowing the prosecution additional time to gather the necessary information for the bail application.

Adams’ case has drawn significant attention due to his status as an MP and the allegations of high-level interference in a murder investigation. The outcome of his bail hearing and the broader implications for his political career remain uncertain.
