Nebraska Medical Marijuana: Election Results Certified Amid Signature Trial
Nebraska Medical Marijuana Trial Update
LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) – Nebraska is waiting for a decision on the medical marijuana trial after all sides submitted their written arguments.
One side claims there was widespread fraud among signature collectors and notaries. They argue that many signatures should be invalidated. In contrast, the ballot sponsors defend their petition, stating that the opposing side is trying to undermine the voters’ will due to a few mistakes, which they believe aren’t enough to affect the legality of their nearly 90,000 signatures.
Earlier this month, voters supported legalizing and regulating medical marijuana in Nebraska. The certification of these results will occur in two weeks.
Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers stated that the ongoing petition investigation will not impact the certification of the ballots. He said:
“I’ll approach certification how I would have regardless of this. If the court rules on this after certification or another timetable on appeals, it does not impact what I do on certification.”
Hilgers plans to certify the votes on December 2, even if the court has not made a decision by then. He aims to let the court handle any future rulings.
Despite the ongoing trial about signatures, medical marijuana is likely to become law in Nebraska. The Lancaster District Court Judge Susan Strong will decide on the lawsuit, but the Nebraska Supreme Court may also review the case.
Voters have made their choice clear: they want medical marijuana legalized. Recent polling shows strong support, with seven out of ten voters saying “yes” on Election Day.
