The Dutch KNVB Cup final between NEC Nijmegen and Feyenoord drew tens of thousands of supporters to Groningen’s Grote Markt on Saturday, April 19, 2026, transforming the city center into a sea of red, black, and white as fans gathered hours before kickoff at Euroborg Stadium.

Official attendance figures released by the KNVB confirmed 42,500 spectators inside the stadium, with an additional estimated 15,000 fans filling the Grote Markt fan zone despite restricted access points and heightened security measures following earlier crowd management concerns.

Local authorities closed off several streets surrounding the market square by 10:00 a.m. CET to accommodate the influx, deploying extra police units and municipal stewards to manage flow toward the stadium, located approximately 800 meters away.

Transport disruptions emerged in the late afternoon as the final regional buses departing Groningen Central Station faced overwhelming demand, prompting what eyewitnesses described to De Gelderlander as “paniek bij de laatste bussen” — panic at the last buses — as supporters scrambled to secure return travel after the match.

GNVO, the regional transit operator, confirmed in a statement that all scheduled post-match services were supplemented with additional shuttle buses, though delays of up to 25 minutes were reported on routes to Nijmegen and Arnhem due to boarding congestion near the station’s main exits.

Amid the pre-match festivities, NEC supporter club veteran Jan Boekhoorn led a spontaneous rendition of the team’s anthem “Voor Altijd” from a makeshift stage near the north end of the Grote Markt, his voice amplified by a portable sound system as thousands sang along in unison.

The moment was captured on multiple fan-recorded videos circulating on social media, showing Boekhoorn — identifiable by his NEC scarf and longtime presence at home games — encouraging younger supporters to join the chorus, a tradition he has maintained during cup finals since 2010.

On the pitch, Feyenoord secured a 3-1 victory over NEC, with goals from Santiago Giménez (23’), Quinten Timber (41’), and Anis Hadj-Moussa (78’), while NEC’s only reply came from Elayis Tavşan in the 65th minute.

The win marked Feyenoord’s first KNVB Cup trophy since 2018, completing a domestic double after clinching the Eredivisie title earlier in the season, and denied NEC their first major men’s trophy in club history.

Post-match, Feyenoord coach Arne Slot praised his team’s resilience, stating in a press conference broadcast by NOS Sport: “We knew NEC would come out strong, especially after scoring, but we stayed composed and executed our plan.”

NEC manager Rogier Meijer acknowledged the disappointment but highlighted the achievement of reaching the final, telling reporters: “Getting this far against such opposition is a testament to the group’s effort all season. We’ll build from this.”

The Grote Markt remained open for celebratory gatherings until approximately 11:30 p.m. CET, with Feyenoord supporters continuing to chant and wave flags well after the stadium had emptied, before gradually dispersing under the supervision of local law enforcement.
