Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan – Discussions regarding the evolving political landscape in Syria and the future of Kurdish populations within the country were central to a meeting today between President Nechirvan Barzani of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and Mazloum Abdi, commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The meeting, held in Erbil on February 5, 2026, also included Ilham Ahmed, co-chair of the Syrian Autonomous Administration’s External Relations Office, and Rohilat Efrin, commander of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ).

According to a statement released by the Kurdistan Region Presidency, the talks focused on “recent political and field developments in Syria and the agreement between the Syrian government and the SDF.” President Barzani reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region’s support for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing issues in Syria, emphasizing the importance of dialogue between all parties and the protection of the rights of all components of Syrian society, including the Kurdish people, within a unified Syrian framework.

Abdi reportedly provided an overview of the current situation in Syria, including discussions with Damascus and international actors. He also expressed his gratitude to President Barzani and the Kurdistan Region for their continued support of the Kurdish people’s legitimate rights and their efforts to de-escalate tensions. The statement noted Abdi’s appreciation for the Kurdistan Region’s “constant role in supporting the legitimate rights of the Kurdish people and its efforts to calm tensions.”

The meeting also addressed the ongoing threat posed by terrorism and the increased activity of ISIS in the region. Both sides agreed that continued coordination between all parties and the support of the International Coalition are crucial factors in maintaining regional security. This underscores the continued importance of international collaboration in countering extremist groups and stabilizing Syria.

This meeting occurs against a backdrop of shifting dynamics in Syria, particularly following recent agreements between the Syrian government and the SDF. While details of those agreements remain closely guarded, they represent a significant development in the decade-long Syrian civil war. The involvement of the Kurdistan Region, with its longstanding ties to Kurdish groups in Syria, is seen as critical in navigating these complex negotiations.

The presence of Ilham Ahmed and Rohilat Efrin highlights the broad representation within the Syrian Kurdish leadership engaging with regional stakeholders. Ahmed’s role in external relations underscores the Autonomous Administration’s efforts to secure international recognition and support, while Efrin’s participation as commander of the YPJ emphasizes the importance of women’s participation in the political and security landscape of Syria.

The meeting also took place shortly after a visit by French Foreign Minister to Erbil, where he also met with Mazloum Abdi. This indicates a concerted effort by international actors to engage with key players in Syria and the region to address the evolving situation. A U.S. Envoy is also scheduled to meet with Abdi in Erbil, according to the Iraqi Kurdistan presidency, further demonstrating the international focus on the region.

The Kurdistan Region has historically played a mediating role in Syrian affairs, particularly concerning the Kurdish population. Its geographical proximity to Syria, coupled with its close cultural and political ties to Syrian Kurds, positions it as a key interlocutor in any potential resolution to the conflict. President Barzani’s reaffirmation of support for a peaceful solution underscores the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to stability in the region.

The discussions surrounding the protection of Kurdish rights are particularly sensitive, given the historical marginalization of the Kurdish population in Syria. The Syrian government’s recent engagement with the SDF raises questions about the future status of Kurdish autonomy and the extent to which their rights will be protected within a unified Syria. The outcome of these negotiations will have significant implications for the future of the Kurdish population and the overall stability of the region.

The focus on countering ISIS also reflects the ongoing security challenges in Syria. Despite the territorial defeat of the group, ISIS continues to pose a threat through its insurgent activities and its ability to recruit and operate in remote areas. The continued cooperation between the SDF, the International Coalition, and regional actors is essential to prevent the resurgence of ISIS and maintain security in the region.

The meeting in Erbil represents a crucial moment in the ongoing efforts to address the complex challenges facing Syria. The discussions between President Barzani and Commander Abdi, along with the participation of key figures from the Syrian Kurdish leadership, highlight the importance of regional cooperation and dialogue in finding a sustainable solution to the conflict. The international community’s continued engagement, as evidenced by the visits of the French Foreign Minister and the planned meeting with the U.S. Envoy, underscores the global significance of the situation in Syria.
