Iran’s envoy to the United Nations said on April 21, 2026, that direct negotiations with the United States remain on hold and will not proceed unless the U.S. Ends its naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran views as a violation of a temporary truce agreement.

Speaking to reporters in New York, Ambassador Amir Saeed Iravani stated that while Iran has received signals suggesting Washington may be prepared to lift the blockade, no concrete steps have been taken, and Tehran will not engage in talks until the blockade is fully removed. “Break the blockade, we will negotiate,” Iravani said, echoing a precondition repeatedly emphasized by Iranian officials in recent days.

The blockade, which Iran alleges began in early April 2026, involves U.S. Naval vessels restricting commercial and humanitarian shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil exports. Iran claims the measure violates a short-term understanding reached in late March to de-escalate tensions following a series of maritime incidents in the Gulf.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated Tehran’s position on April 20, stating that the country “knows how to resist bullying” and will not yield to external pressure. He emphasized that any negotiations must occur on equal footing and without preconditions imposed by the United States.

U.S. Officials have not publicly confirmed the existence or details of a naval blockade, though they have acknowledged ongoing security operations in the region aimed at ensuring freedom of navigation. The U.S. State Department declined to comment on specific military movements when asked on April 21, directing inquiries to the Department of Defense.

Analysts note that the Strait of Hormuz sees approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply pass through its waters, making any disruption a matter of significant global economic concern. Previous standoffs in the area have led to spikes in energy prices and increased insurance costs for shipping.

As of April 22, 2026, no formal talks between U.S. And Iranian officials have been scheduled, and diplomatic channels remain strained. Both sides continue to exchange public statements through intermediaries and international forums, with neither indicating a willingness to de-escalate unilaterally.
