mother and Three Children Die ⁢in London House fire; Man Arrested

A devastating⁢ house fire ⁤in Stonebridge, northwest London, has⁣ claimed ⁣the lives of a 43-year-old mother and her three⁢ children: a 15-year-old girl, an eight-year-old boy, and a four-year-old boy. The London fire broke out‍ early Saturday morning⁣ on Tillett Close.

A 33-year-old neighbor, Victor Pedra, an electrician, heard screams and ‍rushed to help. He broke a window, injuring himself, and managed to rescue a 70-year-old grandmother and her teenage granddaughter. The grandmother has since been released from the‍ hospital, but the granddaughter ⁤remains in intensive care.

Police have arrested a 41-year-old man on suspicion ⁤of⁤ murder in connection⁣ with the fatal ⁤blaze. He is currently in custody for questioning. Authorities were alerted around 1 a.m. after neighbors spotted flames and reported hearing small explosions.

Floral tributes and a teddy bear have been placed near‍ the scene. Scaffolding has been erected ‍in front of ⁤the damaged home as⁤ investigators continue to examine the site.

Local councillor Tariq Dar identified the victims ⁤as the wife and children of Usman ⁢Ghani. He shared his condolences on Facebook,asking for prayers for the family during this difficult time.

One neighbor recounted seeing a girl covered in soot being carried out on a stretcher. Another neighbor sheltered children who escaped from⁢ the back of the house, describing them as distraught.

Michael⁢ Quinlivan, a resident of ⁢49 years, expressed his shock at the tragedy. Another eyewitness reported hearing⁢ small explosions and smelling smoke from 50 yards away.Mohamed⁢ Labidi,a neighbor and acquaintance of the family,said he was too distraught to look at the⁢ house.

Cecilia Marquis, a caterer, described feeling “numb” from ⁢the devastation. Another neighbor expressed the difficulty in processing the event, having ⁤recently moved to the area.

Eight fire engines and 70⁣ firefighters responded to the scene,battling the blaze for over two hours. A man, shirtless and covered in soot, was seen outside ⁣the house and later taken⁤ into police custody.

Superintendent Steve Allen acknowledged the⁣ community impact and assured ‍residents that officers would‍ remain in the area. He⁤ urged anyone ⁣with information⁣ to contact the police.London Fire Brigade assistant commissioner Keeley Foster conveyed her ⁢condolences to those affected by this tragic house fire.

Pedra recounted the father’s desperate pleas: ⁤

“I⁣ heard the dad outside crying and screaming ‘my ⁤children, my wife, my whole family is in there’. He was in shock and couldn’t really speak.”

He⁤ also ⁣recalled the firefighters’ efforts to revive the mother and son:

“I couldn’t sleep that night as I just⁣ kept hearing the screams from inside the house.”
