Nelson, New Zealand, was struck by flash flooding Monday after a period of heavy rain. The sudden deluge caused manhole covers to erupt and led to reports of livestock being swept away by swollen rivers.
Chris Best, assistant commander for Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) Nelson-Marlborough, noted that the floodwaters began to recede after about two hours. he attributed the flooding to numerous blocked drains throughout the Nelson area.
While some homes experienced water entering garages,Best characterized the damage as relatively minor. “The drains have taken effect again and the water has cleared,” Best said,downplaying the potential for a major damaging event.Fire crews from Stoke and Hira assisted Nelson’s four local crews in responding to the numerous calls for help.

Despite the lack of an official rain warning, the event served as a reminder for residents to maintain clear drains and gutters, especially with autumn leaves falling, Best said.Nelson Tasman Civil Defense cautioned the public via social media to treat all floodwaters as potentially contaminated.
MetService’s rain radar indicated moderate rainfall over the upper South Island, although no specific watches or warnings were in place for Nelson at the time.

FENZ Southern Communications Center reported over 20 incidents starting around 10:15 a.m., primarily between Washington Street and Bishopdale. According to shift manager Lyn Crossan, priority was given to incidents posing immediate danger to people. She advised against travel in the affected areas.
Brittany Van de Waardt recounted witnessing cows being swept away. “that’s when he saw the two cows in the river… one of the cows looked to be deceased,” Van de Waardt said, adding that they reported the incident to the council.

Alec louverdis,Nelson City Council group manager infrastructure,stated that the council was actively monitoring conditions and addressing surface flooding. rutherford Street was temporarily closed for manhole repairs,and the eBus service was briefly suspended. Residents were urged to delay travel and avoid floodwaters.

State Highway 6 south of Nelson was closed due to slips and flooding, according to the New Zealand Transport Agency.
