Updated June 12, 2025
Salford red Devils center Nene Macdonald, 31, has begun unpaid leave from the club, which faces financial difficulties. The Papua New Guinea international plans to spend time with his family.
Macdonald, who joined from Leeds Rhinos last season, quickly became a key player. He contributed to the team’s fourth-place finish and super League play-off appearance. He also earned the supporters’ player of the year award and a Super League Dream Team nomination.
Though, salary cap restrictions, stemming from the Red Devils’ financial woes, limited Macdonald to only five Super League appearances this season. The club’s financial challenges impacted his role.
Head coach Paul Rowley acknowledged the tough situation. “In a bizarre situation, the rules imposed upon our club meant his loyalty and desire to not leave was to his detriment, and he was left in limbo for several months which was very a difficult situation for him,” rowley said.
Rowley added that the club supports Macdonald’s decision. “The club and Nene have agreed that it’s in his best interest to go back home and enjoy some time with friends and family,” he said.
The door remains open for a future return. “We will continue to talk, and Nene remains registered to our club for a return in the future. The door will remain open and he leaves with all our love and understanding,” Rowley said.
