Background: The Rise and Fall of Golden Dawn
Giorgos Michaloliakos, the founder and former leader of the Greek far-right party Golden Dawn, was briefly released from prison in May 2024 before being ordered back to incarceration due to perceived insufficient good behavior, according to the French news agency AFP. This incident has sparked outrage from left-wing and communist parties in Greece.
Golden Dawn, officially founded in 1980, gained prominence during the Greek financial crisis. It achieved its highest level of political success in the 2012 elections, securing the third-largest number of seats in the Hellenic Parliament with an anti-immigrant and nationalist platform. The party capitalized on widespread economic hardship and social unrest.
Despite officially denying being a neo-Nazi institution, Golden Dawn openly displayed Nazi-influenced iconography and Michaloliakos himself was documented giving the Hitler salute at rallies. The Southern Poverty Law Center identifies Golden Dawn as a neo-Nazi group.
Criminal Convictions and the 2020 Trial
In October 2020, Michaloliakos and numerous other former Golden Dawn members of parliament were convicted of leading and belonging to a criminal organization. The landmark trial stemmed from investigations into a series of violent attacks, including the murder of anti-fascist musician Pavlos Fyssas in 2013, and attacks on Egyptian fishermen and communist activists. The court determined that Golden Dawn operated as a paramilitary group responsible for numerous hate crimes.
The convictions resulted in lengthy prison sentences for Michaloliakos and other key figures within the party. The trial was widely seen as a crucial test of Greece’s commitment to combating extremism and upholding the rule of law.
Recent Release and Re-Imprisonment: A Political Controversy
The May 2024 decision to briefly release Michaloliakos sparked immediate condemnation from across the Greek political spectrum. Greece’s New Left party issued a statement, reported by state media, calling the release “a serious blow to the collective memory and the struggle for democracy and justice,” and criticizing the justice system for perhaps sending “a message of impunity to those who embodied hatred and fascism.”
The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) also demanded the reversal of the release decision, asserting that Golden Dawn’s “crimes are not time-limited in the consciousness of the people and the youth.” The re-imprisonment shortly after the initial release suggests judicial authorities agreed with thes concerns regarding Michaloliakos’s potential to incite further extremism.
