Nepal Flash Flood Death Toll Nears 400 With Hundreds Missing

Rescue teams searched along the Nepal-China border for hundreds of missing people following a catastrophic torrent of floods and mud triggered by a glacial collapse, according to official reports published on Thursday, August 27, 2026. The missing individuals from the pilgrimage span 19 countries, including 22 from the United States. Crespi noted that the organization has conducted pilgrimages for 21 years without a single recorded fatality.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed solidarity with the Nepali people on social media, stating that the department stood ready to supply humanitarian assistance. The U.S. Embassy in Nepal offered condolences, urged affected nationals to contact families or tour companies as communications allowed, and announced a $500,000 grant to Catholic Relief Services alongside a dispatched regional response adviser.
