According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, preliminary satellite analysis from Planet Labs indicates that a debris-laden flood entered the Lhende river after a glacial-rock slide occurred along the border, approximately 20 kilometres northeast of the Rasuwagadhi border point.
Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal told Parliament that an earthquake struck Tibetan territory at 8:37 am, with the flash flood reported just three minutes later.
While the United States Geological Survey initially flagged a magnitude 4.4 earthquake in Tibetan territory about 47 kilometres north of Gosainkunda, the agency later confirmed via satellite imagery and seismic waves that a glacial collapse and debris flow caused the disaster rather than tectonic activity.
Wreckage and Severed Communications
The ensuing deluge wreaked havoc across mountain communities, destroying buildings and critical infrastructure along the Nepal-Tibet frontier.
Rescuers have pulled survivors caked in mud from the wreckage as the official toll climbs, while the number of missing individuals surged significantly to nearly 2,000. Families of foreign nationals, including missing Singaporeans, have publicly voiced anguish over a lack of definitive answers.
Laxmi Prasad Niraula, Nepal’s consul general in Lhasa, noted that communications, road networks, and internet services in the affected border sectors remain completely disrupted. Both Nepali and Chinese authorities are struggling to establish contact with deployed security personnel or verify precise casualty figures.
Science Points to Accelerating Alpine Warming
International climate scientists attribute the disaster to the accelerating impacts of global warming on alpine ice.
Dr Wouter Buytaert, a reader in hydrology and water resources at Imperial College London, stated that the disaster matches the profile of a climate-triggered event where warming temperatures shrink glaciers and destabilize valley slopes.
Dr Adrian McCallum, a glaciologist and polar engineer at the University of the Sunshine Coast, explained that natural moraine dams holding back glacial meltwater breach when destabilized, releasing massive volumes of water down narrow mountain valleys.
These findings align with a study published last month by researchers at Kathmandu University in Frontiers in Climate, which warned that Himalayan warming rates exceed the global average and heighten the risk of glacial lake outburst floods.
Misinformation Spreads Amid Data Gaps
Amid rescue and recovery efforts, the disaster also unleashed a wave of anti-China misinformation across digital platforms, exploiting information gaps caused by severed communications and limited access near the border.
Foreign Minister Khanal told lawmakers that Nepal is actively seeking real-time data and scientific cooperation from Chinese authorities and research institutions to determine the exact origin point and trigger mechanism of the flood.
With weather conditions hindering on-the-ground assessment and no formal cross-border mechanism currently in place for real-time information sharing, Nepali and Tibetan officials continue to rely on satellite imagery to track the scale of the crisis.
