Farmer Blocks Access to Land Amid illegal Dumping Concerns
A farmer in Wallonia, Belgium, blocked access to his fields on January 23, 2026, after alleging that the Société Wallonne des Déchets (SWDE), the Walloon Waste Management Company, continued to use his land as an illegal dumping ground despite a promised cessation date of December 31, 2025. The farmer, whose name has not been publicly released, claims the SWDE is depositing construction debris, including concrete blocks, on his property.
“Last week, they started bringing garbage again. They think they can do whatever they want,” the farmer stated, according to reporting by DHnet on January 23,2026. “They claim it’s good land, but look: there are concrete blocks from another construction site, it’s good for the scrapyard, all of that. It’s land they’re moving for the third time. They’re using my field as a dump. SWDE had promised it woudl be finished by December 31st, but the situation is getting worse. So I alerted the police and blocked access to my parcels of land. They can’t come and pollute it.”
The farmer reported the issue to local police. The SWDE has not yet issued a public statement regarding the allegations as of January 24, 2026, 16:17:03 CET.DHnet reports attempting to contact the SWDE for comment.
This incident follows ongoing concerns about illegal dumping practices in the Walloon region. In 2024, the Walloon government allocated €15 million to combat illegal waste disposal, according to a press release issued by the Minister of Surroundings on March 12, 2024.
