Netanyahu Called Delusional: Egypt Opposes Gas Deal
Egypt Challenges Israel Over Gas deal Amidst Rising Tensions

Cairo is directly confronting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following reports he considered suspending a meaningful gas supply agreement with Egypt.Diaa Rashwan, Head of Egypt’s State Information Service (SIS), issued a strong rebuke on television, accusing Netanyahu of being “delusional” and publicly challenging him to cancel the agreement if he dared.
Rashwan’s statement, reported by Anadolu Agency, suggests Netanyahu is unwilling to accept the economic and political repercussions that would follow a cancellation of the deal. The existing agreement sees Israel supplying natural gas to Egypt,a crucial component of Egypt’s energy infrastructure and export capabilities.
Beyond the economic implications, Rashwan’s comments reveal a deeper layer of political tension. He asserted that netanyahu perceives Egypt as a significant obstacle to the realization of a “Greater Israel” - a controversial political concept advocating for the expansion of Israeli territory – and views Cairo as a key defense against the potential displacement of Palestinians. Rashwan characterized Egypt as “the first defense line against the eviction of Palestinians” and a “thorn in his flesh.”
The dispute was triggered by a report in the Israeli newspaper Harian Hayom on tuesday, which stated that Netanyahu had instructed officials to seek his personal approval before proceeding with the gas agreement. This move signaled a potential shift in policy and prompted the swift response from Egyptian officials.
The gas agreement represents a strategic partnership between the two countries, and any disruption could have far-reaching consequences for both nations and the wider regional energy market. The situation underscores the increasingly fragile relationship between Egypt and Israel, particularly in the context of ongoing geopolitical instability in the Middle East.
