Hostage Release Anticipated
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the controversy surrounding his handling of the Gaza ceasefire deal on Sunday, November 26, 2023, but emphasized the need for unity as the release of hostages approaches. He stated, “This is an emotional evening, an evening of tears, an evening of joy, because tomorrow our children will return to our borders,” quoting a biblical verse.
Netanyahu expressed hope that the return of hostages would mark “the beginning of a new path – a path of rebuilding, a path of healing and, I hope, a path of united hearts,” in a televised address.
Criticism from Hostage Families and Political Opponents
Despite the anticipated release, Netanyahu has faced criticism. Some families of hostages held in Gaza by Hamas have accused him of prioritizing military victory over securing their loved ones’ release. This discontent was publicly displayed on Saturday when attendees at a rally in solidarity with the families booed U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff while he praised Netanyahu’s leadership.
The Israeli leader also faces opposition from the right wing, including hardline members within his own cabinet, who disapprove of the agreed-upon prisoner exchange.
