Gaza Aid Deaths and Rising Child Hunger Fuel Crisis

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is spiraling, with dozens killed while seeking desperately needed aid and a grim milestone reached in child malnutrition deaths. As Israel’s offensive continues, the territory faces widespread displacement and a growing threat of famine.
Deadly chaos as Palestinians Seek Aid
At least 31 Palestinians were killed on Saturday while attempting to access aid deliveries in Gaza, according to hospitals and eyewitness accounts. The incidents occurred in multiple locations – the Israeli-controlled Morag and Netzarim corridors, and the Teina area in southern Gaza – with witnesses consistently alleging Israeli forces opened fire on crowds gathering for food distributions or awaiting convoys.Fifteen deaths were reported near the morag corridor, which separates Rafah and Khan Younis, as confirmed by Nasser Hospital. Jamal al-Laweh, a witness to the violence, described the area as a “death trap,” yet emphasized the agonizing necessity of risking his life to provide for his children. “But I have no other choice to feed the kids,” he stated.
Further north, six Palestinians were killed while waiting for aid near the Zikim crossing, according to both Gaza’s Health Ministry and Shifa Hospital.
In central Gaza, witnesses reported hearing warning shots followed by live fire directed towards crowds attempting to reach a distribution site operated by the Gaza humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an organization backed by Israel and funded by the US. while the Associated Press could not independently verify who fired the shots, Awda Hospital reported four fatalities resulting from Israeli gunfire. An additional six aid-seekers were killed while attempting to reach GHF sites in khan Younis and Rafah,Nasser Hospital confirmed.
The GHF, launched in May as an option to the UN-run aid system, has been plagued by reports of deaths and widespread chaos. In response to inquiries from the Associated Press, the GHF media office denied any incidents occurred near their sites. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also stated there were no reported incidents involving troops near aid sites in central Gaza. These denials stand in stark contrast to the numerous eyewitness testimonies and hospital reports.
Hunger Death Toll Among Children Reaches 100
Israel’s ongoing air and ground offensive has resulted in the displacement of the vast majority of Gaza’s population, pushing the region to the brink of famine. Tragically, the number of Palestinian children who have died from malnutrition-related causes has now reached 100 since the start of the war.
Two children died on Saturday alone, adding to the devastating toll. Since June, when the Health Ministry began tracking these deaths, at least 117 adults have also succumbed to malnutrition. These hunger-related deaths are in addition to the already staggering war casualty count reported by the Health Ministry: 61,400 Palestinians. While the ministry, operating under the Hamas-run government, does not differentiate between combatants and civilians, it reports that approximately half of those killed have been women and children. The United Nations and independent experts widely consider the ministry’s data to be the most reliable source of data regarding war casualties in Gaza.
The Escalating Famine Risk
The combination of restricted aid access, widespread displacement, and the destruction of infrastructure is creating a perfect storm for famine. International organizations warn that without a notable increase in humanitarian assistance, the situation will continue to deteriorate rapidly. The targeting of aid convoys and distribution sites, as evidenced by Saturday’s events, further exacerbates the crisis, hindering efforts to deliver life-saving supplies to those in need. The long-term consequences of widespread malnutrition, especially among children, will be profound and lasting.
