Gaza Aid Distribution faces Scrutiny Amidst Rising Casualties
The distribution of humanitarian aid in Gaza is under intense scrutiny amid reports of rising casualties among Palestinians seeking assistance. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have vehemently denied claims that Israeli soldiers were ordered to fire on Palestinians approaching aid sites.
According to the Gaza health Ministry, more than 500 Palestinians have died and hundreds more have been wounded while attempting to obtain food since the Gaza humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began its operations a month ago. Witnesses have reported Israeli troops opening fire on crowds heading toward distribution points.
The Israeli military confirmed it is investigating incidents where civilians were harmed near aid sites but refuted allegations of deliberately targeting civilians. The GHF,backed by an American private contractor, distributes food boxes at four locations, primarily in southern gaza.
“GHF is not aware of any of these incidents, but these allegations are too grave to ignore, and we therefore call on israel to investigate them and transparently publish the results in a timely manner,” the group stated in a social media post.
Palestinians face chaos and violence while seeking food, exacerbated by a 2 1/2-month siege that blocked essential supplies until the GHF sites were established. Dr. Mohamed abu selmyiha, director of Shifa Hospital, reported that eight bodies arrived from a GHF site in Netzarim on Friday, though the cause of death was unclear. He added that 20 other bodies came from airstrikes in northern Gaza. A GHF spokesperson disputed any knowledge of incidents at their sites on Friday.
Mohammad Fawzi, a displaced man from Rafah, recounted his experience of receiving only empty boxes after trekking to an aid site in Rafah.”We’ve been shot at since 6 a.m.up until 10 a.m. just to get aid, and only some people were able to receive it,” Fawzi said. “There are martyrs and injured people. The situation is arduous.”
Doctors Without Borders condemned the distribution system as “a slaughter masquerading as humanitarian aid” and demanded its immediate cessation. Since the collapse of a ceasefire on March 18, over 6,000 people have been killed and more than 20,000 injured in Gaza. The Gaza Health Ministry reports more than 56,000 deaths and 132,000 injuries as the start of the war, noting that women and children comprise over half the fatalities. Israel maintains it targets only militants and blames Hamas for civilian casualties.
The Israel-Hamas conflict began after the Oct.7,2023,attack in southern Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and 250 hostages. Around 50 hostages remain in Gaza. recent casualties include six deaths and 10 injuries from Israeli strikes near the Martyrs Roundabout in the Bureij Camp, according to Awda Hospital officials.
U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres urged leaders to demonstrate “political courage” and agree to a ceasefire similar to the Israel-Iran agreement. He also advocated for a return to the UN’s established aid distribution system in Gaza, citing a “humanitarian crisis of horrific proportions” caused by Israeli military operations. “The search for food must never be a death sentence,” Guterres emphasized.
What’s next
Investigations into the incidents at aid distribution sites are ongoing, and international pressure is mounting for a more effective and safe system to deliver humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza. The United Nations is expected to continue pushing for a ceasefire and a return to its established aid protocols.
