Gaza Aid Looting Allegations Amid israel-Hamas War

Rafah, Gaza—Amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, accusations of aid looting have surfaced, further straining humanitarian efforts in Gaza. Allegations center on a group called the Popular Current, formerly linked⁣ to the Abu Shabab family, wich is accused of intercepting and looting aid convoys.

The group’s media office, responding to inquiries, stated its operations in Israeli military-controlled areas are “purely humanitarian,” focused on facilitating⁢ aid and preventing‍ interception.⁤ They described their ties with the Israeli military as “humanitarian communication” and denied receiving military or logistical support from any foreign entity. The group claimed to⁢ have “secured‍ the surroundings” of aid centers in Rafah but denied involvement in food distribution.

While rejecting⁢ accusations of widespread looting as “exaggerations,” the group admitted its forces, led by Yasser Abu Shabab, took “the minimum amount of food and water necessary” to secure their positions. Nahed Sheheiber, head of Gaza’s private transportation union, said Abu Shabab and about 100 fighters have been active in eastern Rafah and Khan younis, areas under Israeli military control. He said they previously attacked ⁣aid trucks en route from the ⁤Kerem shalom crossing.

“Our⁤ trucks were attacked many times by the Abu Shabab gang, and the occupation forces stood idle,” Sheheiber said, referring to the Israeli military. “The one who has looted ⁢aid‍ is now⁣ the one who protects aid,” he added sarcastically.

An aid worker, speaking anonymously, said negotiations ⁢with Abu Shabab and other influential families last year to halt convoy looting initially succeeded but soon reverted to hijacking. The aid worker ⁢reported seeing Abu Shabab’s men operating in Israeli-controlled areas near the Morag Corridor in late May, equipped with ⁢new uniforms and weapons.

Jonathan Whittall, head of the United Nations humanitarian office for the occupied Palestinian territory, said “criminal gangs‍ operating under the watch of Israeli⁣ forces near Kerem Shalom would systematically attack and loot aid convoys… These gangs have by far been the biggest cause of aid loss⁣ in gaza.”

The Israel-Hamas war, triggered by the Oct. 7 attacks that killed about ⁣1,200 Israelis and⁤ took 251 hostage, has devastated Gaza. Israeli tallies ⁣state that Hamas militants stormed⁣ into southern Israel. Israel’s subsequent offensive has displaced nearly⁣ all of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents,⁢ creating‍ a humanitarian crisis and near-famine conditions after an ⁢11-week food blockade.

Gaza’s Health Ministry reports more than 54,000 Palestinians⁢ have died in the conflict, with more than half being women ⁤and children. The ministry, while led by medical professionals, reports to the Hamas-run government and‍ does not differentiate between civilians and ⁤combatants in its count.

Hamas is still holding 56 hostages, with about a third believed ‍to be alive. Israel recently recovered the bodies of two Israeli-American hostages in a secret operation.

In related developments, Israeli strikes overnight killed at least 22 people in gaza, including three journalists. ⁣The military said it targeted a militant in the strike.

Israeli forces⁤ also ‍bombed southern suburbs of Beirut, prompting accusations of ceasefire violations. Israel claimed it targeted Hezbollah drone manufacturing sites, following evacuation warnings issued 90 minutes prior ⁢to the strikes. This marks the fourth bombing of Dahiyeh as a U.S.-brokered truce in November.

Simultaneously occurring, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on four International Criminal Court judges over investigations into‍ alleged war crimes by U.S. troops in Afghanistan and the issuance of an arrest warrant for Netanyahu. Secretary ⁢of State Marco Rubio said the judges were “actively engaged in the ICC’s illegitimate and baseless actions⁤ targeting America or our close ally, Israel.” The ICC has decried the sanctions as undermining its independence.

The‍ court issued an arrest warrant for ⁢Netanyahu in November over allegations of war crimes in Gaza.⁣ Neither the U.S. nor Israel is a party to the court, which was established in ‍2002 to prosecute war crimes, genocide, and other⁤ atrocities.
