Netanyahu Accuses World Leaders of Emboldening Hamas
Updated May 27, 2025
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin netanyahu has publicly criticized the leaders of france, the united Kingdom, and Canada, asserting that their stance on the Gaza conflict is “emboldening Hamas to continue fighting forever.” His statement follows a recent shooting in Washington, D.C., that killed two people with ties to the Israeli embassy.
The two embassy staff members, Yaron Lischinsky, 30, and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, 26, were killed Wednesday night. Elias Rodriguez, 31, of Chicago, faces first-degree murder charges in connection with the incident. A witness reported rodriguez saying, “I did it for Gaza” and “Free Palestine.”
Netanyahu argues that Hamas aims to destroy Israel and the Jewish people. He expressed disbelief that French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister sir Keir Starmer, and Canadian Prime Minister mark Carney fail to grasp this “simple truth.”
Netanyahu said Hamas thanked Macron, Starmer, and Carney for demanding Israel end its war in Gaza. He added, “by issuing their demand—replete with a threat of sanctions against Israel, against israel, not hamas—these three leaders effectively said they want Hamas to remain in power.”
The Israeli leader stated, “Now, these leaders may think that they’re advancing peace. They’re not. They’re emboldening Hamas to continue fighting forever.”
Netanyahu’s remarks follow a joint statement issued by Macron, starmer, and Carney on May 19. In that statement, the leaders said they “strongly oppose the expansion of Israel’s military operations in Gaza.” They also described the level of human suffering in Gaza as “intolerable” and called on israel to allow humanitarian aid to enter gaza.
The three leaders also urged Hamas to release the hostages taken since Oct. 7, 2023.
“When mass murderers, rapists, baby killers, and kidnappers thank you, you’re on the wrong side of justice, you’re on the wrong side of humanity, and you’re on the wrong side of history.”
Netanyahu’s sentiments echo those of Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who linked the D.C. shooting to “antisemitic and anti-Israeli incitement” by leaders and officials, particularly in Europe.
Christophe Lemoine, a French Foreign Ministry spokesperson, called the accusations “entirely outrageous and completely unjustified,” reaffirming france’s condemnation of antisemitism.
U.K. Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard disputed netanyahu’s assessment of the British position, stating that the U.K. supports Israel’s right to self-defense within international law and emphasizes the need for aid to reach suffering Gazans.
What’s next
The diplomatic fallout from Netanyahu’s statements remains to be seen, but it underscores the deep divisions over the handling of the Gaza conflict and the broader Israeli-Palestinian issue. Further statements from the involved nations are expected.
