Donald Trump, during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, expressed confidence in securing a ceasefire in Gaza, while also announcing plans to send additional weapons to Ukraine. The developments come as both conflicts continue to rage, challenging Trump’s earlier campaign promises of swift resolutions.
Trump Confident of Gaza Ceasefire
Netanyahu’s visit to Washington saw Trump stating his belief that Hamas is prepared to agree to a truce with Israel.”I think Hamas wants a truce, and we’re working on it,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday. He also indicated Israel had agreed to “necessary conditions” for a 60-day ceasefire, though details remain scarce.
the pursuit of a ceasefire comes after Hamas’s October 2023 attack on southern Israel, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people and the abduction of more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli figures. Israel’s subsequent military campaign in Gaza has, according to the territory’s health ministry, killed at least 57,523 people. These figures are considered reliable by the United Nations. The scale of the conflict has drawn international concern and increased pressure for a resolution.
During the meeting, Trump lauded Netanyahu, stating he had “demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship.”
US to Send More Weapons to Ukraine
Alongside efforts to de-escalate the situation in Gaza,Trump announced the US would bolster support for Ukraine with additional weaponry. This announcement follows a recent, temporary halt to some arms shipments to Kyiv by the White House.
“We’re going to have to send more weapons – defensive weapons primarily,” Trump stated, emphasizing the urgent need to support Ukraine as it faces intense pressure from Russia.
While reaffirming support for Ukraine, Trump also expressed his dissatisfaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “They’re getting hit very, very hard,” he said of Ukraine, adding, “I’m not happy with Putin.”
International Reactions to US Policy
The shift in US policy has drawn varied international responses. Pakistan swiftly condemned Trump’s reported consideration of airstrikes on nuclear facilities in Iran, characterizing the move as an “unprecedented escalation of tension and violence” and a violation of international law, amidst the ongoing conflict involving Israel. This highlights the delicate geopolitical landscape and the potential for wider regional instability.
Trump initially campaigned on a platform of being a “peacemaker,” promising to leverage his negotiating skills to swiftly end conflicts in both Ukraine and Gaza.Though, more than five months into his presidency, both conflicts remain active, presenting critically importent challenges to his foreign policy objectives.
