Jerusalem – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has affirmed that the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority (PA) will not play any role in the governance of post-war Gaza “in any way,” according to statements made during a meeting with US envoy Steve Witkoff on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.

“The Prime Minister clarified that the Palestinian Authority will not be involved in administering the Strip in any way,” Netanyahu’s office stated following the meeting, as reported by multiple sources. This position underscores Israel’s firm stance against any PA involvement in the future administration of the Gaza Strip.

The declaration comes amidst ongoing discussions regarding the future of Gaza following the recent two-year conflict, which concluded with a ceasefire plan brokered by former US President Donald Trump. However, the Trump plan left the post-war role of the PA in Gaza undefined, creating a period of uncertainty regarding governance structures.

Currently, the Technocratic National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG) is responsible for handling day-to-day affairs in the territory. This committee is intended to serve as an interim body until the PA completes a program of reforms, a condition seemingly rendered moot by Netanyahu’s latest pronouncements.

Witkoff’s visit, which included the reopening of the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt, marks the second meeting between the US envoy and Netanyahu in less than two weeks, indicating the urgency of ongoing diplomatic efforts. During the meeting, Netanyahu reiterated his core demands for any resolution to the conflict: the complete disarmament of Hamas, the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip, and the fulfillment of Israel’s war objectives before any reconstruction efforts can begin.

Israel’s insistence that neither Hamas nor the PA should be involved in governing post-war Gaza reflects a broader rejection of Palestinian sovereignty in the region, including the West Bank and East Jerusalem – territories seized during the 1967 Middle East war. This position has been consistent throughout Netanyahu’s leadership and represents a significant obstacle to any potential peace negotiations.

The rejection of the PA’s role has prompted some concern regarding the symbolism of the NCAG itself. Netanyahu’s office expressed dismay on Monday, February 2, 2026, over the inclusion of a PA symbol in the NCAG’s logo, interpreting it as evidence of a link between the two entities. “Israel will not accept the use of Palestinian Authority symbols; the Palestinian Authority will have no role in the governance of Gaza,” the Prime Minister’s office stated.

In response, the NCAG clarified on social media platform X that it had been exploring various visual concepts for its logo and that the design was still subject to change. The committee emphasized its focus on providing humanitarian aid, establishing civil administration, facilitating recovery efforts, and ensuring a viable future for the residents of Gaza.

Beyond the issue of governance, Netanyahu has also indicated openness to discussing the potential for “safe passage” for Hamas leaders as part of a broader agreement, contingent upon the release of all Israeli hostages and an end to the conflict. He confirmed ongoing discussions with the Trump administration regarding a 21-point plan for Gaza, prioritizing hostage release, Hamas disarmament, and demilitarization.

The US President Trump’s plan, as described by Netanyahu, also includes proposals for the relocation of the Palestinian population of Gaza to neighboring countries, a suggestion that has been met with strong opposition from Arab leaders. Netanyahu reiterated his commitment to this aspect of the plan, stating, “I am committed to President Trump’s plan for creating a different Gaza.”

The current impasse over the future governance of Gaza underscores the deep-seated complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Netanyahu’s firm rejection of the PA’s involvement, coupled with his insistence on stringent conditions for any ceasefire or reconstruction, presents significant challenges to international efforts to achieve a lasting resolution. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing diplomatic engagement and the potential for further developments as negotiations continue.
