Netanyahu Vows Illegal Occupation of Syrian Territory Will Be Permanent
Israel Expands Military Presence in Golan Heights, Declares Region “Inseparable”
TEL AVIV – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights will “forever remain an inseparable part” of Israel, as the nation bolstered its military presence in the region.
Netanyahu’s statement came Monday evening following a weekend of escalating military activity in the Golan Heights. On Sunday, Israeli forces moved into a buffer zone separating the territory from Syria, a move prompted by the collapse of Syrian government control in the area.
“Today, everyone understands the importance of our presence there, in the Golan, and not at the foot of the Golan,” Netanyahu said during a press conference, referencing Israel’s capture of the territory from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967.
Israel unilaterally annexed the Golan Heights in 1981, a move considered illegal by the international community except for the United States.
Until Sunday, Israeli forces had not been stationed along the Golan Heights-Syria border, adhering to a 1974 agreement that established a demilitarized zone on the Israeli side, patrolled onyl by UN peacekeepers.
The Israeli military deployment followed the weekend’s dramatic developments in Syria, where opposition forces seized control of Damascus and Syrian president Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia seeking asylum.
In a video statement from the region, Netanyahu asserted that the 1974 agreement had effectively “collapsed” as Syrian forces “abandoned their positions.”
On Monday,Israeli troops moved beyond the buffer zone and into Syrian territory, according to Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz. The operation aims to establish a “security zone” free from “heavy strategic weapons and terrorist infrastructure,” Katz said.
Among the locations captured by Israeli forces is the syrian side of Mount hermon, the site of a key battle during the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

The expansion of Israel’s military presence in the Golan Heights has raised concerns about potential escalation in the already volatile region.
Israel’s Golan Heights expansion: A Security Necessity or escalation?
NewsDirect3.com sat down with Dr.Layla Ahmed, a Middle East security analyst for teh International Crisis Group, to discuss the implications of Israel’s increased military presence in the Golan heights.
ND3: Prime Minister Netanyahu has declared the Golan Heights “inseparable” from Israel and cited the collapse of syrian government control as justification for the military deployment. How do you assess the situation?
Dr. Ahmed: The situation is undoubtedly complex. While Israel has long considered the Golan strategically vital, this unilateral expansion of their military presence raises serious concerns. It effectively undermines the existing 1974 disengagement agreement and risks further destabilizing an already fragile region.
ND3: Some argue that Israel’s actions are purely defensive, aiming to protect itself from threats emanating from Syria. do you agree?
Dr. Ahmed: While Israel undoubtedly faces security challenges, the scope of their deployment seems to go beyond simple defense. The establishment of a “security zone” deep inside Syrian territory, coupled with the capture of Mount Hermon, suggests a more assertive and perhaps expansionist agenda.
ND3: How do you think the international community will react to israel’s move?
Dr. Ahmed: this move is highly likely to draw condemnation from the international community, who largely consider the Golan Heights occupied territory. It is a direct challenge to international law and could further complicate efforts to resolve the Syrian conflict.
ND3: What are the potential consequences of this escalation for the region?
Dr. Ahmed: The consequences could be severe. This unilateral action could provoke retaliation from Syrian factions, increase tensions with Iran and Hezbollah, and hinder future peace negotiations. It could also fuel instability and violence in the region, creating a humanitarian crisis.
ND3: What steps, if any, could be taken to de-escalate the situation?
Dr. Ahmed: Urgent diplomatic intervention is needed to prevent further escalation. The international community must convey a clear message to Israel that their actions are unacceptable and urge them to withdraw to the pre-1967 borders.
Simultaneously, efforts must be made to stabilize the situation in Syria and address the underlying causes of the conflict. This requires a complete political solution that involves all stakeholders.
