Netanyahu Prioritizes Victory Over International Image in Gaza War
Israel’s Stance on International Criticism
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin netanyahu stated on Sunday, September 3, 2024, that he is prepared to accept damage to Israel’s international image to achieve what he defines as “victory” in the Gaza War.According to a statement released by his office, Netanyahu saeid he woudl choose victory over his enemies over avoiding negative international propaganda.
Netanyahu acknowledged the diplomatic and propaganda costs Israel is incurring, but emphasized the need for “wholly new mechanisms” to end the conflict quickly and decisively. He defined victory as the elimination
of Hamas, the return of all hostages, and ensuring Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel.
Military Offensive and Displacement in Gaza
These statements were made during a full-scale offensive by the Israeli army against Gaza City, the capital of the Gaza Strip. Prior to the recent offensive, approximately one million Palestinians resided in Gaza City, many of whom had already been displaced from other areas within the enclave.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian affairs (OCHA) reported that, as of August 14, 2024, nearly 41,000 people, primarily from Gaza City, had fled to the south of the Gaza Strip, as Israel intends to displace the city’s population.
Netanyahu claimed that over 100,000 Gazans have already left the town, though he did not provide supporting evidence. He also stated that the army is successfully targeting and eliminating critical terrorist leaders
in gaza City, which he described as Hamas’s last important bastion
.
