Overview
The WN and NWYC2025 tournament utilizes a points-based system during the round-robin stage. In the event of a tie in points between teams, goal average/percentage will be the primary tie-breaker to determine final standings. However, specific provisions are in place to address situations involving forfeited fixtures, ensuring fairness and competitive integrity.
Standard tie-Breaking Procedure
Following the completion of the round-robin stage, teams will be ranked based on total points accumulated. If two or more teams are tied on points, the following procedure will be used:
- goal Average/Percentage: The team with the highest goal average/percentage will be ranked higher. Goal average is calculated by dividing the total number of goals scored by the total number of goals conceded. Goal percentage is calculated by (Goals Scored / Goals Conceded) * 100.
Tie-Breaking with forfeited Fixtures
A unique provision exists to address ties involving teams affected by forfeited fixtures. This is designed to prevent unfair advantages or disadvantages resulting from circumstances outside of on-field play.
Specifically, when a team tied in points with one or more other teams has been impacted by a forfeited fixture, all goals scored for and against that team *in matches against the team to whom the forfeit was awarded* will be excluded from the goal average/percentage calculation. This means those goals will not be counted when determining the tie-breaker.
example: Team A forfeits a match to Team B. Later, Team B ties on points with Team C. When calculating the goal average/percentage to break the tie, goals scored by or against Team B in their match against Team A will be excluded.
Rationale for the Forfeiture Rule
The tournament organizers emphasize that this provision is intended to ensure equitable treatment of all teams and to preserve the competitive integrity of the tournament. forfeits can introduce an artificial element into goal statistics, and excluding goals from the relevant match aims to level the playing field.
