Netflix has finally started production on the second season of Ryan Murphy’s true-crime drama series “The Watcher,” bringing back original stars Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale, Margo Martindale, and Isabel Gravitt. The renewal was initially announced in November 2022 following an eight-episode first season, but no further production updates were shared publicly until October 2, 2026.
Production Kicks Off in New York With Returning Cast
Filming for the upcoming episodes is underway this fall in New York, according to production details released by Netflix. The streamer confirmed that Watts and Cannavale will reprise their roles as the married couple who drain their finances to purchase a suburban dream home, only to face relentless terror from an anonymous letter-writer. Martindale and Gravitt are also confirmed to return for the second installment.
The first season premiered in 2022 and quickly reached No. 1 on the domestic top 10 TV shows list within a day of its release, spending five weeks on the international English TV list. Alongside the main cast, the original run featured performances by Mia Farrow, Richard Kind, and Jennifer Coolidge. Netflix has not yet disclosed whether any of those supporting actors will return for the new season.
Real-Life Westfield Incidents That Inspired the Series
The plot of “The Watcher” draws heavily from documented real-world events that took place in Westfield, New Jersey, in 2014. Shortly after Maria and Derek Broaddus closed on a nearly 4,000-square-foot home for $1.3 million, they received a disturbing letter from an anonymous sender claiming to have watched the property for years.
The family intended to raise their three children in the neighborhood where Maria Broaddus grew up. Instead, the purchase led to years of unsettling letters, public town meetings, mounting legal battles, and financial strain that ultimately forced the couple to sell the house in 2019. The real Watcher was never found.
Netflix Targets 2027 Release Window for Next Project
While Netflix has not officially confirmed an exact premiere date, the fall production schedule points toward a 2027 release window. The platform has also kept plot details for the second season under wraps.
The production milestone coincides with the continued success of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan on the platform. Their latest release, “Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story,” recently spent two weeks at the top of the Netflix streaming lists, focusing on the murders of Andrew and Abby Borden.
