The Netherlands is currently experiencing a flu epidemic, with cases rising rapidly in recent weeks. According to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), 59 out of every 100,000 people consulted their general practitioner with flu-like symptoms last week, exceeding the epidemic threshold of 46 per 100,000.

This marks the second consecutive week that the number of cases has remained above the threshold, officially triggering the declaration of an epidemic. The previous week saw 51 cases per 100,000, indicating a continued upward trend in infections. The RIVM monitors both the number of individuals seeking medical attention for respiratory illnesses and the prevalence of the influenza virus in laboratory samples to assess epidemic activity.

While this year’s epidemic is beginning later than in 2025, when an epidemic was already underway at the end of January, the current situation warrants attention. Last year’s peak saw 118 GP visits per 100,000 people in early February, a higher level than currently observed. However, the outbreak subsided by the end of March.

The RIVM emphasizes that flu-like symptoms can be caused by various respiratory viruses, not solely influenza. However, laboratory results confirm a rising presence of the influenza virus itself. The agency notes that while most individuals with the flu do not require a visit to the doctor, the data from those who do provide a reliable indicator of how the virus is spreading through the population.

Understanding the Flu and its Risks

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is caused by the influenza virus. Symptoms typically include cough, fever, fatigue, headache, sore throat, and muscle aches. While most people recover without medical intervention, certain groups are at higher risk of developing severe complications. These include individuals over the age of 60, people with underlying lung conditions, and those with diabetes.

The RIVM reports that influenza contributes to approximately 4,700 deaths annually in the Netherlands, highlighting the potential severity of the illness, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Impact on Healthcare System

Currently, the RIVM states that the epidemic is not directly causing widespread disruption to the healthcare system. However, hospitals are prepared to implement additional measures if needed, such as designating specific wards for influenza patients to minimize the risk of transmission.

Some hospitals have already begun to experience increased pressure due to the surge in cases. The Albert Schweitzer Ziekenhuis in Dordrecht, for example, was recently forced to postpone some non-urgent surgeries due to the increased demand on its resources. Urgent procedures, such as those in oncology, continue as scheduled.

RIVM Recommendations for Prevention

The RIVM offers several recommendations to help prevent the spread of influenza:

  • Stay home if you are sick: This is the most effective way to avoid infecting others.
  • Work from home if possible: If you are experiencing mild symptoms, working remotely can help limit exposure.
  • Cover your cough and sneeze: Use your elbow or a tissue to prevent the spread of droplets.
  • Maintain distance from others: Physical distancing can reduce the likelihood of transmission.
  • Avoid contact with vulnerable individuals: Protect those who are at higher risk of severe complications.
  • Consider wearing a mask: If contact with vulnerable individuals is unavoidable, a mask can provide an additional layer of protection.

The threshold for declaring an epidemic has been adjusted this year, with the RIVM setting the limit at 46 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 53 per 100,000 last year. A spokesperson for the RIVM explained that this number is determined annually based on a variety of factors.

Public health officials continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as needed. Individuals experiencing flu-like symptoms are encouraged to consult their general practitioner for advice and appropriate care.
