Tallon Griekspoor played a key role in the Netherlands’ historic victory over Germany in the Davis Cup semi-finals. He won his match against Jan-Lennard Struff 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-4, securing the team’s spot in the final for the first time in 104 years.
“We have been talking about this for two or three years,” said Griekspoor. “To do it now feels unbelievable. I am so happy for the team and for Holland.”
Griekspoor excelled on the fast indoor courts, serving 25 aces and winning 83 percent of points on his first serve. Struff had his chances but missed crucial break points in the second set.
Earlier, Botic van de Zandschulp set the tone for the Dutch team with a hard-fought victory over Daniel Altmaier, winning 6-4, 6-7(12), 6-3.
“I’m not sure how I did it,” said Van de Zandschulp. “I had a lot of match points, and it was tough.” He ultimately converted on his 10th match point after two hours and 42 minutes of intense play.
Van de Zandschulp faced a strong challenge from Altmaier, who saved five match points in the second set tie-break. Despite the setbacks, he held his composure to close out the match.
The Netherlands will face either Italy or Australia in the final, set for Saturday.
