The male wolf, named Neukgu, was safely returned to the O-World zoo in Daejeon, South Korea, on Friday, April 17, 2026, after a nine-day search that captivated the nation and drew widespread attention across social media and news outlets.

Neukgu, a two-year-old wolf born in 2024, had burrowed out of his enclosure at the zoo on April 8, prompting an extensive search effort involving hundreds of rescue officials. His escape and subsequent capture turned him into a national celebrity, with South Koreans following updates closely as authorities worked to locate him.

Upon capture near an expressway in Daejeon at 00:44 local time (16:44 GMT), veterinarians examined Neukgu and confirmed his pulse and body temperature were normal. Authorities reported that he appeared to be in good health after his time on the run.

Neukgu is part of a conservation program at O-World aimed at restoring the Korean wolf, a species once native to the Korean Peninsula but now considered extinct in the wild. His escape raised concerns about his ability to survive outside captivity, though officials noted he had avoided danger during the nine days he was at large.

The search for Neukgu included multiple near-captures, including a reported sighting on a mountain about 2 kilometers from the zoo on Monday night, which prompted a search-and-rescue mission. However, the wolf evaded capture each time authorities came close, often slipping away just as nets were being deployed.

Neukgu’s story inspired a meme coin created by supporters who hailed him as a “wolf that wouldn’t stay caged” and a “symbol of independence.” His journey sparked widespread online discussion, with videos of him moving through dark roads illuminated by vehicle headlights circulating on social media platforms.

His safe return was met with relief across South Korea, with many expressing joy that the wolf had been found unharmed. Photos released by Daejeon Municipality showed veterinarians and staff examining Neukgu at the O-World theme park shortly after his capture.

O-World zoo officials have not announced any changes to Neukgu’s enclosure or care following the incident. The zoo continues to participate in the Korean wolf restoration program, which seeks to preserve the species through captive breeding and public education efforts.
