Nevada Treasurer Zach Conine Speaks in Carson City

The Democratic primary for Nevada’s attorney general has emerged as the most expensive contest among the state’s Democratic primaries this year, characterized by a divide between the party establishment and a high-fundraising challenger.

The race for the office is open for the first time in eight years, as current Attorney General Aaron Ford is running for governor. The contest features Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro and State Treasurer Zach Conine, two political adversaries who have engaged in a public dispute over their respective qualifications for the role.

Candidate Credentials and Qualifications

Nicole Cannizzaro, 43, is positioning herself as the most qualified candidate based on her legal and legislative record. She has more than a decade of experience working in the Clark County District Attorney’s Office and currently serves in the top leadership role in the state Senate.

Zach Conine, 44, is emphasizing his executive experience and his professional background as a business attorney. He is currently serving his second term as the state treasurer.

The two candidates have focused their attacks on the perceived weaknesses of the other’s résumé. The conflict has included exchanges regarding a lack of courtroom experience on one side and the use of taxpayer funds for upgrades to legislative buildings on the other.

Fundraising and Party Support

The campaign has seen the highest level of advertising spending of any Democratic primary in Nevada this year. According to reporting from The Nevada Independent, Zach Conine has outraised Nicole Cannizzaro to date.

Despite Conine’s fundraising lead, Cannizzaro is the preferred choice of the “Reid Machine,” the term used to describe Nevada’s powerful Democratic Party establishment.

The Role of the Attorney General

The attorney general serves as the chief legal officer for the state of Nevada. In this capacity, the office is responsible for representing the state and its residents in both criminal and civil matters.

Additional responsibilities of the office include providing legal counsel to state officers and agencies, as well as assisting various law enforcement agencies with court cases and investigations.

Nevada law limits the attorney general to a maximum of two four-year terms.

The winner of the Democratic primary will advance to the November election, where they will face a Republican candidate who is supportive of Donald Trump.
