New 18-Hole Disc Golf Course Opens at Stevens Park in Niles
Visitors to Stevens Park in Niles can now enjoy disc golf year-round, thanks to a new 18-hole course that opened recently. The grand opening event took place on Saturday, with city officials and enthusiastic disc golfers present.
Mayor Steve Mientkiewicz announced that this is Niles’ first disc golf course. He recalled that discussions about implementing disc golf began in 2019. Initially, they considered Waddell Park for the course, but they ultimately chose Stevens Park. The course was funded by both grants and city funds, totaling nearly $14,000.
Instead of a traditional ribbon cutting, the mayor kicked off the event by throwing the first disc at hole one. Kris Kriebel, a health educator, noted that disc golf promotes health and wellness and expected the course to be popular. This project is part of ongoing efforts between the health district and Niles, which have previously included pickleball and basketball courts.
Brad Silvers from Turbo Putt Disc Golf highlighted the work involved in creating the course. He described it as a wooded course, providing challenges because of the trees. Professional disc golfer Andy Martin expressed his excitement to play on this new layout, praising the course’s difficulty due to the tree obstacles.
