CARILÓ – Chinese automaker Leapmotor officially launched in Argentina this week at the Summer Car Show, following months of anticipation from Stellantis executives. The arrival signals a continued push by Asian automakers into the country, often facilitated by government quotas for electric vehicle models.
Founded in Hangzhou in 2015 by tech entrepreneurs Zhu Jiangming and Fu Liquan - the creators of Dahua Technology – Leapmotor began construction on its jinhua plant in 2017 and started vehicle production in 2019. The brand gained significant momentum after forming an alliance with Stellantis in 2023. Stellantis now controls Leapmotor International and its operations outside of China, with plans for production in both Brazil and Europe.
Leapmotor experienced rapid growth in China, producing its one millionth vehicle last year. The company focuses on intelligent electric vehicles, offering a combination of “technology, design, safety, connectivity and comfort,” according to Valère Lourme, head of the brand in Argentina.
Leapmotor specializes in BEV (battery electric vehicles) and REEV (range extended electric vehicles).
