New Berlin Farmer Acquitted in Tractor-police Car Collision Case
NEW BERLIN, NY – A local farmer is walking free after a Chenango County jury acquitted him on all felony charges stemming from a dramatic incident involving a police car and a tractor. Stanislaw Sapinski, of New Berlin, faced a three-day trial that concluded Wednesday with the jury’s decision.
Sapinski had been indicted by a Chenango County Grand Jury on charges of criminal mischief, two counts of attempted assault, and obstruction of government administration. The charges arose from an altercation with a police officer who was attempting to issue Sapinski a ticket for livestock running at large. Prosecutors alleged that Sapinski intentionally drove his tractor into the police car, putting the officer in danger.
Had he been convicted, Sapinski coudl have faced up to seven years in prison.
Chenango County District Attorney Michael Ferrarese issued a statement following the verdict, saying, “While we disagree with the decision that the jury made in this case, we certainly respect their verdict and the process that played out in court.”

These stemmed from an encounter with a police officer attempting to issue Sapinski a citation for livestock running at large.Prosecutors argued that sapinski deliberately rammed his tractor into the police car, thereby endangering the officer.
A conviction could have resulted in up to seven years of imprisonment for Sapinski.
Commenting on the verdict, Chenango County District Attorney Michael Ferrarese stated, “While we disagree with the decision that the jury made in this case, we certainly respect thier verdict and the process that played out in court.”
