New Caledonia is experiencing a significant dengue fever outbreak, with health authorities reporting over 1,000 probable and confirmed cases since the start of 2026. The outbreak has entered an active epidemic phase, driven primarily by the DENV-1 serotype, prompting intensified vector control measures and public health alerts across the territory.

According to the Directorate of Health and Social Affairs, weekly case counts began rising steadily in February, with particularly high numbers reported during epidemiological weeks 11 to 13. This sustained increase indicates ongoing community transmission across the islands, leading officials to declare an active epidemic phase in late March.

Transmission is currently most intense outside the Greater Nouméa area, where case numbers have risen sharply. In contrast, the municipalities of Dumbéa, Mont-Dore, Nouméa, and Païta within Greater Nouméa have maintained comparatively lower and more stable case counts. Public health officials attribute this relative stability in urban zones to the ongoing World Mosquito Programme, which releases Wolbachia-infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to reduce the insects’ ability to transmit dengue.

The programme’s interventions have significantly lowered dengue transmission in treated areas, helping to moderate spread in the capital region even as peripheral communities experience sharper increases. Authorities have issued a red alert for the DENV-1 serotype, underscoring the immediate public health priority of reducing mosquito exposure and enhancing surveillance efforts.

As of mid-April 2026, New Caledonia has recorded more than 640 probable and confirmed dengue infections, with the total now surpassing 1,000 cases according to recent updates. Despite the availability of the Qdenga dengue vaccine in the European Union and France, no vaccination campaign is currently underway in New Caledonia. The vaccine is not routinely offered through local health services, leaving vector control and personal protection as the primary defenses against the virus.

Health officials continue to urge residents and visitors to practice heightened vigilance, including the use of insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed. The outbreak also carries regional travel implications, given New Caledonia’s location east of Brisbane, Australia, and its popularity as a destination for international travelers.

There is no indication of a dengue vaccination campaign being planned at this time, and public health messaging remains focused on prevention through mosquito bite avoidance and early symptom recognition. Authorities emphasize that preventing mosquito bites remains the most effective immediate defense against dengue transmission.
