Medical Students Protest Curriculum Changes at National University of La Plata

Medical students at the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) of the National University of La Plata (UNLP) have found themselves at the center of a contentious debate over significant changes to their curricula. According to a recent statement, the university has faced over 60 administrative claims from students who allege violations of administrative procedures, commission of criminal crimes for adulteration of the curricula, and unjustified delays and illegal retention of their files.

“”The UNLP is silent for more than 60 administrative claims of students who denounce the violation of the administrative procedure, the commission of criminal crimes for adulteration of the curricula, and the unjustified delay and the undue retention of their files to be treated in virtue of the hierarchical resource filed, said the group of students. Almost a hundred students are protesting against changes in curricula that were imposed just as they were about to graduate.

The issues began at the end of 2023, when a note posted on a billboard at the Faculty ordered that students who did not pass two final exams by the elective closure date on March 31 would lose their academic standing and be transferred to a new curriculum plan. Those who met the criteria would continue with the previous plans. Many students only learned about this change at the beginning of March, leaving them struggling to understand these conditional requirements and effectively altering how they manage their time for study and other commitments.

“”The irregularities and violations of rights by the FCM and the UNLP continue incessantly,””

Complex Curriculum Changes

The faculty now hosts four different curricula, with plans to increase this number to eight. This complexity creates an environment of uncertainty for students, as there is no clear equivalence system to guide them through the transition. Students who have not completed their studies due to various career, health, or personal reasons are at risk of being thrown into a new curriculum without adequate transitional support. This has been described as an “”illegitimate resolution and clear violation of procedure, carried out by the Dean of the Faculty.

Legal Backing

The statement also highlights that the changes and regulations instituted by the Dean have not been reviewed by the Pedagogy or Teaching Commissions. “”David and Associates,” a legal firm representing the students, continues to assert that this violates the guidelines set by ordinance 282/10 of the curricula.

Student Concerns

The group consists of students who balance full-time careers or family responsibilities with their studies. These professionals, previously on a part-time academic trajectory, argue that they have had no adequate notice or support system to navigate the new curriculum effectively. “”Others have suffered, or suffer chronically, health difficulties that make the progress in the studies at a different rhythm, and so they carry out the difficult task of studying the medicine career

Claims and Appeals

Claims were presented to the FCM in mid-2024, but the Faculty’s resolution in early July rejected most files without valid legal foundations, as stated by the students and their legal counsel.

When the students appealed to the board, they did not receive a response within the stipulated time. This failure led to escalation to the Higher Council of the UNLP, which has also failed to resolve the issue. Now, the students are considering taking legal action to force the university to adhere to its own regulations and provide a proper resolution.

“”Today, students are pushed to have to face the costs and times of justice to be able to reverse this framework of arbitrary and illegitimate situation.””

When interposing an appeal before the Board of Directors, the students did not receive a response “within the stipulated period” which allowed them to resort to the Higher Council of the UNLP. However, “the university has not resolved the situation and has breached its own regulation, returning the files to the FCM without giving them treatment, which has led students to consider judicial actions,” the denouncing lawyers demand.

Intensifying Concerns

Medical education is moving towards integrating more cutting-edge advancements, personalized curricula and real-world training. The spontaneous changes and their flawed implementation in Argentina have sparked fresh debates in academia worldwide, with universities in the U.S. and Europe reconsidering their administrative procedures for curriculum modifications. Institutions and regulatory bodies alike must prioritize transparency and provide robust support mechanisms for addressing the needs of all students, particularly those grappling with balancing academic and personal obligations.

The Legal counsel of the students, David and Association, who sponsor the students said “”At the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the UNLP, 4 different curricula coexist and they came to live up to 8 in parallel, in a scenario of complete uncertainty Justice needs to revert this arbitrary and illegitimate situation and resolve all these pending issues.
