Researchers from Tohoku University and the National University of Singapore confirmed the discovery of Chironex blakangmati—named after the Malay term for "Island of Death Behind"—adding a fourth member to the Chironex genus, whose stings can kill humans within minutes.

The find, published in verified marine biology research, resolves a long-standing taxonomic mystery. For years, scientists assumed the newly discovered jellyfish was identical to Chironex yamaguchii, a species first documented in Okinawa. However, anatomical comparisons—including a re-examination of preserved samples from Okinawa—revealed critical differences.

A Deadly but Elusive Discovery

"To the untrained eye, C. Blakangmati looks remarkably like C. Yamaguchii," she stated. "But genetic and morphological analysis confirmed they are distinct species."

The identification also marks the first recorded presence of C. Yamaguchii in Singaporean waters, suggesting a possible range expansion for this Okinawa-native species. While the exact ecological impact remains under study, marine biologists warn that increased jellyfish populations—driven by factors like warming ocean temperatures—could pose growing risks to coastal safety and tourism.

The discovery was published in collaboration with Tohoku University’s Graduate School of Life Sciences and the National University of Singapore’s Tropical Marine Science Institute. No immediate policy changes are expected, but authorities are monitoring jellyfish populations as part of broader coastal safety protocols.


Researchers emphasize that further fieldwork is needed to determine whether C. Blakangmati is endemic to Singapore or part of a wider, undocumented migration pattern across the Indo-Pacific.
