New Dublin to Navan Rail Line Project: Sustainable Commuting by 2035
A new project will restore passenger trains to Navan, Co Meath, before 2035.
The project will create a rail line about 20 kilometers long. It will connect the existing station at M3 Parkway, located north of Dunboyne, to Navan. This development will allow for a direct train service from Navan to Dublin city. As Navan grows as a busy commuter town, this connection is increasingly important.
Iarnród Éireann plans to build new stations, including Dunshaughlin and Kilmessan, along the route. The delivery phase is anticipated between 2030 and 2035, depending on planning and funding approvals. This work aligns with the NTA’s Greater Dublin Area Transport Strategy.
The first phase will focus on scope and design development over the next two years. Public consultations will be held to gather feedback on the preferred route. A Railway Order application will be submitted to An Bord Pleanála in 2027.
How will the Navan Rail Project contribute to sustainable transportation in Ireland?
Interview with Jim Meade, Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann, on the Navan Rail Project
NewsDirectory3: Thank you for joining us today, Jim. Could you provide an overview of the new project to restore passenger trains to Navan, Co Meath?
Jim Meade: Thank you for having me. We are excited about the Navan rail project, which aims to connect the existing M3 Parkway station to Navan with a 20-kilometer rail line. The goal is to establish a direct train service from Navan to Dublin city, which is particularly important as Navan continues to grow as a busy commuter town.
NewsDirectory3: This project also includes plans for new stations. Can you elaborate on that?
Jim Meade: Certainly. Along the route, we plan to construct new stations at Dunshaughlin and Kilmessan. These additional stops will provide residents with improved access to rail services and encourage more sustainable travel options in the area.
NewsDirectory3: The timeline for this project spans several years. When do you anticipate the delivery phase to begin?
Jim Meade: The delivery phase is expected to take place between 2030 and 2035, depending on how quickly we can secure planning and funding approvals. In the immediate future, we’ll focus on scope and design development over the next two years. We want to ensure that we have a well-thought-out plan that meets the needs of the community.
NewsDirectory3: Public consultation seems to be a key aspect of this development. How do you plan to engage with the local community?
Jim Meade: Yes, public consultations will be crucial. We aim to gather feedback on the preferred route from residents and stakeholders to ensure that the project aligns with the community’s expectations and needs. Following this phase, we plan to submit a Railway Order application to An Bord Pleanála in 2027.
NewsDirectory3: How do you expect this project to impact local residents and the economy?
Jim Meade: Our research indicates that residents in Navan, Kilmessan, and Dunshaughlin will enjoy faster, more sustainable travel options thanks to the new low-carbon train service. This initiative will reduce road traffic and help support growth and economic development in the region. We believe it will promote urban development and better use of land in eastern Ireland, connecting new communities to our rail network.
NewsDirectory3: Why is the Navan rail line particularly crucial for sustainable transport in Co Meath?
Jim Meade: As the population in Co Meath increases, we recognize the need for sustainable transport solutions. By linking Navan to Dublin via rail, we can encourage more commuters to choose trains over cars. This shift will contribute to reduced congestion on our roads and lower carbon emissions from transportation, making it a vital step towards sustainable development.
NewsDirectory3: Thank you for your insights, Jim. We look forward to seeing how this project unfolds in the coming years.
Jim Meade: Thank you, and I appreciate the opportunity to share this important development with your audience.
