A new light-based scan developed to detect necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants aims to address a devastating bowel disease that strikes vulnerable newborns with almost no warning. According to reporting from Science News, the experimental imaging approach uses light to spot tissue damage early, offering a potential low-risk diagnostic method for a condition that frequently progresses rapidly before traditional symptoms appear.

Necrotizing enterocolitis, commonly known as NEC, primarily affects premature babies whose intestines are not fully developed. The disease causes inflammation and bacterial invasion that can rapidly destroy intestinal tissue, leading to perforation, severe infection, and high mortality rates. Because early signs mimic routine feeding intolerance or common neonatal issues, clinicians often face significant challenges in diagnosing the condition before irreversible damage occurs.
