The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has activated immediate measures to combat a new Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Health officials have raised alarms regarding the potential for regional spread, citing a combination of population movement and security instability in the affected regions.

According to data released by the Africa CDC on May 15, 2026, the outbreak is centered in the Ituri province, located in the northeast of the country. The continent’s top public health body has recorded 246 suspected cases of Ebola and 65 deaths within the province.

Laboratory Findings and Case Confirmations

Preliminary laboratory results from the DRC indicate a significant presence of the virus. Out of 20 samples tested, the virus was detected in 13 of them.

While the number of suspected cases is high, the number of laboratory-confirmed fatalities is currently lower. Health officials stated that Four deaths have been reported among laboratory-confirmed cases….

Regional Spread and the Situation in Uganda

The outbreak has already crossed international borders. On May 15, 2026, the Ministry of Health in Uganda confirmed that a Congolese man had died in the capital city of Kampala.

Uganda’s health authorities reported that the man had traveled from the DRC and was tested for Ebola only after Kinshasa had announced the outbreak. While this death confirms the presence of the virus in Uganda, the Ministry of Health noted that it has not yet confirmed any cases of locally transmitted virus within the country.

Public Health Challenges and Security Risks

The Africa CDC expressed significant concern that the virus could spread more widely due to several complicating factors. The organization identified the following as primary risks to containment:

  • Intense population movement across borders.
  • Ongoing violence in the affected areas.
  • General challenges in maintaining health control measures.

The geography of the outbreak further increases the risk of regional transmission. The affected areas of the DRC sit on the borders of both Uganda and South Sudan, creating a high-risk corridor for the virus to move between nations.

Containment efforts are being severely hindered by a precarious security situation in the eastern DRC. The Congolese government is currently struggling to secure this region due to the activity of armed groups. These groups are reportedly fighting for control of valuable mineral deposits in the area, which disrupts the ability of health workers to reach affected populations and implement necessary medical interventions.

The convergence of a deadly viral outbreak and active conflict creates a complex public health crisis, as violence often displaces populations and destroys the infrastructure required for effective disease surveillance and treatment.
