On Saturday,August 30,2023,the City of boston officially honored the iconic R&B group New Edition with a special party. The city declared August 30th “New Edition Day” and renamed a street corner in the heart of Roxbury, the neighborhood where the majority of the group members grew up, to “New Edition Way.”
Mayor Michelle Wu expressed her enthusiasm, stating it was an “honor” to “welcome home Roxbury natives New Edition to celebrate their global impact from our communities here in Boston to the music industry worldwide.”

Members of New Edition shared their gratitude and emotional responses to the city’s recognition.Bobby Brown conveyed that the honor “means the world to me,” emphasizing that “Boston is where it all began for us.” Ricky Bell echoed this sentiment, stating he was “truly grateful for the privilege.”

Formed in the early 1980s, New Edition rose to fame with hits like “Candy Girl,” “Cool It Now,” and “Mr. Telephone Man.” The group, originally comprised of Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, Ricky bell, Ralph Tresvant, and Ronnie DeVoe, became a defining force in the New Jack Swing era.
