New Federal Prison Opens in Argentina, Aiming to Ease Overcrowding
Coronda, Argentina – after years of delays and construction setbacks, a new federal prison is finaly opening it’s doors in Coronda, Argentina. The facility,designed to alleviate overcrowding in the province of Santa Fe’s prison system,will be inaugurated on Friday with a ceremony attended by Argentina’s Minister of Security,Patricia Bullrich.
Minister Bullrich is expected to arrive in the provincial capital Friday morning and participate in the official opening ceremony alongside Santa Fe Governor Maximiliano Pullaro.
The new prison,a federal facility,will house 464 inmates convicted of federal crimes,according to Santa Fe’s Minister of Security,Pablo Cococcioni. This move aims to reduce the number of prisoners currently serving federal sentences in provincial facilities. An estimated 700 individuals are currently in this situation.
However, Cococcioni clarified that the new prison’s medium-security design limits its capacity to house high-profile inmates.
The prison’s operation is expected to create approximately 750 direct and indirect jobs.
