After decades of limited progress in treating pancreatic cancer, researchers have reported promising results from two new drugs that may significantly extend survival for patients facing this aggressive disease.

Revolution Medicines announced on April 13, 2026, that its experimental drug daraxonrasib helped patients survive an average of 13.2 months after starting treatment, compared to 6.7 months for those receiving standard chemotherapy in a Phase III clinical trial. The company plans to submit these results to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval and has received a Commissioner’s National Priority Voucher, which ensures an expedited review timeline.

The following day, Actuate Therapeutics published findings in Nature Medicine showing that its drug elraglusib, administered intravenously, doubled one-year survival rates for pancreatic cancer patients compared to standard chemotherapy in a Phase II trial. The company intends to continue studying the drug in larger patient groups.

Pancreatic cancer remains one of the most challenging cancers to treat, with survival rates improving since the 1970s but plateauing in recent years. Historically, only about one in 10 patients survive more than five years after diagnosis, and the disease is projected to become the second deadliest cancer in developed countries after lung cancer. Despite increased research funding over the past decade, meaningful treatment advances have been scarce, particularly for therapies targeting immune responses or genetic mutations, which have shown limited effectiveness against pancreatic tumors.

Daraxonrasib targets the KRAS protein, which plays a key role in tumor growth and is mutated in a significant subset of pancreatic cancers. By inhibiting this pathway, the drug aims to slow or halt cancer progression. Elraglusib works through a different mechanism, though specific details of its action were not detailed in the reported studies.

Both drugs represent some of the first substantial progress in pancreatic cancer treatment in decades. While the absolute gain in survival may appear modest — adding roughly 6.5 months of life — such an improvement is considered significant in a disease where most patients live less than a year after diagnosis. Researchers caution that these are early-stage results and that further study is needed to confirm long-term benefits, identify which patients are most likely to respond, and assess potential side effects.

Experts emphasize that while these developments offer hope, a cure remains distant. Nevertheless, the ability to extend life, even by months, marks a meaningful step forward for a patient population that has faced limited options for generations. Ongoing research will focus on refining these therapies, combining them with other treatments, and expanding access through clinical trials and eventual regulatory approval.
