Tallahassee, Florida – Construction is progressing on the Northeast Gateway project, a major infrastructure undertaking designed to improve transportation and connectivity in northeast Tallahassee, Florida. The project, centered around the construction of Welaunee Boulevard and associated infrastructure, is already impacting the landscape and is slated for phased completion over the next two years.
The core of the project involves building a new four-lane roadway, Welaunee Boulevard, extending north from Fleischman Road to Roberts Road. Simultaneously, a two-lane extension of Shamrock Street is being developed, connecting Centerville Road to Welaunee Boulevard. These new routes are intended to alleviate traffic congestion on existing roadways, particularly along heavily-traveled “canopy roads” like Centerville Road, and to facilitate future economic development in the area.
Construction on the first phase of the project, the section south of Interstate 10 (I-10), began on , and is anticipated to be completed by mid-. Visible progress is already apparent to commuters traveling along I-10, with crews clearing land and laying the foundation for a significant overpass. This overpass, a key component of the project, will carry Welaunee Boulevard across I-10, ultimately connecting to Roberts Road and potentially paving the way for a new I-10 interchange.
Work on the I-10 overpass itself commenced on , and is expected to continue until mid-. The construction of the Northeast Gateway access road, to be named Killmore Lane, also began in 2025. This access road will provide direct access to the Northeast Park.
Beyond the roadways, the Northeast Gateway project also includes the development of the Welaunee Greenway, designed to connect with the existing Miccosukee Greenway. This greenway component aims to provide recreational opportunities and alternative transportation routes for pedestrians and cyclists, promoting a more sustainable and active lifestyle for residents.
Martha Hodgson, Blueprint Project Manager, highlighted the long-term benefits of the project. This really been a long time coming and really setting the stage for just the future of this whole area of town, this whole quadrant between Miccosukee and Centerville. This is really going to set the stage for economic development in this area,
Hodgson said, according to reporting by WTXL ABC 27 Tallahassee News.
The project, currently estimated at $198.4 million, was officially approved in 2024 but has been in the planning stages for several years. The scope of the project includes not only the construction of the roadway itself, but also the installation of stormwater ponds, sidewalks, and multi-use paths, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to infrastructure development.
The current phase of construction focuses on creating a new roadway alignment with provisions for two lanes of traffic, alongside 12- and 8-foot sidewalks and a dedicated 12-foot multi-use path. These features are intended to accommodate a variety of transportation needs and enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety.
The Northeast Gateway project represents a significant investment in the infrastructure of northeast Tallahassee. While the immediate impact is focused on improving traffic flow and connectivity, the long-term implications extend to economic development, recreational opportunities, and the overall quality of life for residents in the region. The phased approach to construction, with completion dates spanning several years, underscores the scale and complexity of the undertaking.
As construction progresses, local residents and commuters can expect continued disruptions and adjustments to traffic patterns. However, project managers emphasize that the ultimate goal is to create a more efficient and sustainable transportation network that will benefit the community for years to come.
The project’s progress is being closely monitored by Blueprint, the intergovernmental agency overseeing the development. Further updates and information can be found on the Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency website.
